David Lin: Using Design as Social Commentary

I like creative design and want to use it as a voice for social commentary. During my four years at NYU Shanghai, I reconstructed Shanghai’s Shikumen, a stone gate style of housing, using 3D modeling techniques and volumetric photogrammetry in virtual reality (VR). The interactive VR experience allowed audiences to experience both the beauty of Shikumen and the ongoing dynamics between urbanization and architectural heritage preservation. My design philosophy is ‘simple, sustainable, and advancing daily life,’ and I like to use elements of storytelling in my designs so that participants watch my ideas unfold from my work.

My future dream is to start my own studio that provides design and consulting services to address social problems and create a better future for all.
