As we close out our second academic year at NYU Shanghai, we bid farewell to our 2017 students as they jet off around the world to their exciting study away experiences. We will also be spending the summer eagerly awaiting the arrival of our new class of 2019 freshmen to continue the story of NYU Shanghai. In this issue, we will update you on some of the highlights happening recently at our school, and have a chat with physics and mathematics professor Zhang Jun and the new NYU Shanghai student body president, Michelle Huang.

Classroom Unveiling Ceremony at NYU Shanghai

On May 8, 2015, Qi Gao (Head of the Creative Center at the Shanghai Tongji Urban Planning and Design Institute) and wife Nannan Xia arrived at NYU Shanghai to take part in a classroom naming and plaque unveiling ceremony held to recognize their contributions to the University. Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman and Director of Development Rime Sun represented NYU Shanghai on this occasion.

2015年5月8日下午,上海纽约大学校园内春意盎然。上海同济城市规划设计研究院创作中心主任高崎先生携其太太夏南楠女士莅临我校,参加了校方为其举办的教室冠名揭牌仪式。上海纽约大学副校长Jeffrey Lehman以及基金发展部主任孙霜韵代表我校参加此次活动。


Gao and Xia’s son, Yang Gao, graduated from NYU’s College of Arts and Sciences in New York. As parents of an NYU alumnus in China, Gao and Xia were involved with NYU Shanghai during its planning phases, lending the school their generous support throughout its development journey. In appreciation for their contributions, NYU Shanghai designated a 20-person classroom the "Gao and Xia Classroom."

高先生和夏女士的儿子高阳毕业于纽约大学文理学院。作为纽约大学的中国家长,他们从上海纽约大学筹办之初便给予学校极大的关注和支持。学校为感谢和表彰两位的突出贡献,特将一间20人教室以两位姓氏予以冠名:Gao & Xia Classroom。


The couple, proud of their son’s academic experiences at NYU, witnessed first hand how NYU’s global network expanded Gao's horizons. Not only did Gao graduate with irreplaceable memories of his time in school, his experiences at NYU also formed a crucial chapter of personal growth. It is the pair's hope that their contributions will enable more outstanding students from China and around the world to study at NYU Shanghai and benefit from NYU’s vision of a truly global education. Gao and Xia are among the first individuals to contribute their time and energy to NYU Shanghai, an act that will hopefully encourage more members of the community to get involved in the greater NYU family.

Chancellor Yu Lizhong Gives Speech at the United Nations and China Institute
俞立中校长在联合国及美国华美协进社演讲



On May 28, 2015, NYU Shanghai Chancellor Yu Lizhong spoke at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Titled "Education for the Globalized World," Yu's speech was captured by SinoVision Journal and detailed NYU Shanghai's development, mission, and methodology. "We combine classroom teaching, cultural experience, social perspective, and research practice into one body to help students fully understand the world from different angles and develop a global vision and cross-cultural communication capabilities," Yu said. The Chancellor also explained how NYU Shanghai's vision differs from those of traditional Chinese universities and how these revolutionary changes impact both students and China's higher education system.

New York University 2015 Commencement

NYU’s 183rd Commencement was held on Wednesday, May 20th, 2015 at Yankee Stadium. The stadium was covered in a field of violet as proud graduates were conferred degrees by NYU President John Sexton. The ceremony marked the final commencement presided over by John Sexton in his tenure as President of NYU; it was also the last commencement for NYU board of trustees chairman Martin Lipton. This year’s honorary degree recipients were NAACP Legal Defense Fund Leader Sherrilyn Ifill, Pianist Lang Lang, Mathematician Peter Lax, Humanitarian Graça Simbine Machel, and Immunologist Jan Vilcek.

World Renowned Pianist Lang Lang Conferred Honorary Doctorate from NYU

During NYU’s 183rd Commencement, world-renowned pianist Lang Lang was conferred an honorary doctorate. He had this to say on his microblog: “The sky is a limitless blue on May 20th, how is everyone today? I am standing in New York’s Yankee Stadium, receiving an Honorary Doctorate from NYU! I am so very honored! I will continue to work hard. Did you know I received the degree along with South Africa’s former first lady Graça Simbine Machel? These violet NYU doctorate robes are so beautiful. That’s right, I’ve also brought gifts back for everyone – Yankee team baseball caps. Who wants them?” Lang Lang has been an avid supporter of NYU Shanghai since its inception; he held a special performance for our community in autumn of 2014.

On June 4th, NYU parent Wayne Wang hosted a sendoff event for students to attend NYU as freshmen in fall 2015. Thirty eight guests gathered at CDP Group for a question and answer session, during which Wayne’ daughter, Joy (NYU CAS 2017), shared her experiences at NYU with soon to be freshmen. She spoke enthusiastically about the new experiences that that the university had brought into her life, and encouraged students to take full advantage of NYU’s global resources.
6月4日,纽约大学家长Wayne Wang为即将在2015年秋季进入纽约大学就读的新生举行了一次欢送会。38位来宾齐聚CDP集团,共同问答谈话。纽约大学文理学院 2017届学生,Wayne的女儿Joy与新生们分享了她在纽约大学的经历。她热情地向大家诉说那些大学带给她的新鲜体验,还鼓励学生们充分利用纽约大学的全球资源。
 
 
NYU Shanghai Student Spotlight - Michelle Huang
我们的学生 - Michelle Huang

My name is Michelle Huang, I was born in Fuzhou, China, and my family immigrated to New Zealand when I was around the age of two. As a first generation immigrant, the desire to fit in can be quite overwhelming, and growing up in New Zealand, it was very easy for me to lose touch with my Chinese roots. I remember always answering the question: “Where do you originally come from?” with the answer: “I do not know, I was never told”, despite the obvious Chinese-ness of my surname. Just like the young boy on the new TV series Fresh off the Boat, I refused to eat my mum’s fried rice or chow mien at school, requesting only “white people food”. Thinking back, the extent to which I tried to fit in was quite bizarre. Despite my sorry attempts, it was apparent to everyone that I was Chinese, whether I wanted to admit it or not.

我叫Michelle,出生在中国福州。在我两岁的时候,我们一家人移民到了新西兰。作为第一代移民,想要融入社会的渴望能够压倒一切别的想法。在新西兰长大,让我失去了与中国的联系。我记得我总是这样回答关于故乡的问题:“你来自哪里?”我会回答:“我不知道,没有人告诉过我”,尽管我的姓名有着明显的中国特色。就像那部叫《Fresh off the Boat》的电视剧里的小男孩一样,我不吃我妈做的炒饭和学校的炒面,只能接受“白人食品”。回头想来,我当时努力融入新西兰生活的迫切程度不太恰当。。其实不管我如何努力,不管我承认与否,对于别人来说,我还是一个中国人。
 

Luckily for me, I soon realised that there was no point=xingxilanding to be someone I was not—or rather, pretending not to be someone I was. That was when I became interested in learning about China. This happened as a result of watching a Chinese television series which made me curious about themes and trends in China. I became more interested in other aspects of China, specifically to do with Chinese history and traditions. Before I knew it, I was fully absorbed in this culture I had shunned for most of my early life. In my final years of high school, I ended up collaborating with other students to establish a Chinese cultural appreciation night at our school, which showcased performances and performers from around China. I spoke on our national Chinese news station, and addressed New Zealand ministers and members of parliament on the topic of being a Chinese-New Zealander.

幸运的是,我很快就意识到:把自己变成另外一个人或者假装改头换面是没有意义的。与此同时,我开始对中国产生了兴趣。起因是一部中国电视剧,它引起了我对中国现状和社会趋势的关注。由此,我开始对中国的其它方面也更有兴趣了,尤其是中国的历史和传统。在不知不觉中,我开始沉浸于这个我早年一度回避的文化之中。在我高中生涯的最后一年,我与其他同学合作,在我们学校举办了一场中国文化赏析晚会,介绍了中国各地的表演及表演者。我在新西兰的中国新闻电视台上发言,并为新西兰的部长和议会成员们做了一场关于“华裔新西兰人”的主题演讲。

When it came time for me to choose a University, I immediately thought: Asia. I had not planned to attend school in China because I lacked language proficiency and wanted to learn other subjects besides mandarin, such as the social sciences or performing arts. I planned to attend school either in Hong Kong or Singapore. However, as soon as I found out that NYU had opened a new campus in Shanghai, I knew it was the place for me. It may sound incredible, but as a devout Buddhist, I truly believe fate was guiding me. Just a week before finding out about NYU Shanghai, I had told my parents about how much I really wanted to attend school in China (specifically Shanghai), and how I wished there was a school there which taught its courses primarily in English. I had even prayed for some miracle to happen. NYU Shanghai is that miracle.

到了我要选择一所大学的时候,我立刻想到了中国。我原来并没有来中国读大学的计划,因为我的中文不太好,又想要学习除了普通话以外的其他科目,例如社会科学或表演艺术。我原本打算去香港或者新加坡读大学。然而,当我得知纽约大学在上海设立了新校区的时候,我知道这就是我要去的地方。这听起来不可思议,但是作为一个虔诚的佛教徒,我相信命运在指引着我。就在我发现上海纽约大学的前一周,我和我的父母正好说起过很想去中国上学(特别是上海),还有我多么希望那是一所以英语为主要授课语言的学校。我甚至祈祷奇迹的发生。上海纽约大学就是那个奇迹。

Prior to coming here, I had preconceived notions of what the school and life in Shanghai would be like. Now, all of those notions have been turned on their heads. NYU Shanghai has proven to be much more than what I dreamt it would be. Here, I have met people from around the world, been giving amazing opportunities, and been challenged academically. I have experienced the rapid pace of this city, and become fully engrossed in my life here. I cannot imagine being anywhere else.

在来这里之前,我对这里的生活和学习有着先入之见。现在,所有的固有观念都被打破了。上海纽约大学比我梦想得还要好。在这里,我遇到了来自全世界各地的同学,获得了特别好的机会,并得到学术上的锻炼。我经历了这个城市的快速发展,并全身心地投入这里的生活。我一点儿都不想去别的地方了。

In my first year, I was given the opportunity to plan the NYU Shanghai Spring Formal – a formal dance for all classes and study away students. I had the good fortune to co-found my own club, which went on to receive the Best Newcomer Award at the End of Year Clubs Gala. I developed close friendships with many of my professors and the staff here at NYU Shanghai. I could not have achieved any of this anywhere else. As a new school, NYU Shanghai has given us a lot of power to influence the trajectory of the school’s growth. Our views and voices are respected. 

在大一的时候,我获得了策划上海纽约大学“春季舞会”的机会,那是一个为所有学生和留学生举办的舞会。我还有幸建立了自己的社团,并在年底社团联欢会上获得了”最佳新社团奖”。我和这里的很多教授还有员工也建立起了很好的友谊。在其他任何地方我都不可能获得这些宝贵的经历。作为一所新学校,上海纽约大学给予了我们很多为学校成长添砖加瓦的机会。我们的观点和声音得到了尊重。

Of course, my story is merely one of many at this school. Though we are small, we are a diverse community. I have made friends who came here to learn Chinese or get a head start in one of the world’s international hubs. Others see coming here as a step out of their comfort zones, and a way to push their boundaries. I also have friends who wanted to experience an American university, and make friends with English speakers from around the world. Within this diversity, there is a universal characteristic that unites us – all of us were willing to take the risk. NYU Shanghai is not for those who seek a traditional, comfortable college experience. If you come here, you will experience college like no one else ever has. If you are willing to open up your mind and see the world from a brand new perspective, you will love it here.

当然,我一个人的故事只是九牛一毛。虽然我们学校的规模比较小,但是我们是一个多元化的社区。我的朋友当中,有的是来学中文的,有的想在上海这个全球瞩目的国际大都市崭露头角。还有一些想离开自己习以为常地方,来这里拓宽自己的视野。也有一些同学来这里是想要体验一下美国大学,和来自全世界讲英语同学交朋友。在这样一个多样性的环境中,我们所有人都有一个特点,那就是我们所有人都愿意来这里冒险。上海纽约大学不适合那些想要传统、舒适的大学生活的人。如果你来这里,你将体验到别人体验不到的大学生活。如果你愿意敞开心扉,从全新的视角来发现这个世界的话,你一定会喜欢这里。
 
I am constantly looking forward to the future. This summer, I will be travelling to New York with 11 other classmates to participate in creating next year’s NYU Shanghai Reality Show—an annual musical production showcasing life as a student at NYU Shanghai. Though I’ve always enjoyed theatre, I was convinced that college would be the end of performing for me, but yet again, NYU Shanghai has surprised me. This school has shown me it will give me full support in all of my interests.  

我一直期待着未来。今年夏天,我将和另外11位同学前去纽约,参与筹划明年上海纽约大学的“Reality Show“——那是一个展示上海纽约大学学生生活的年度音乐剧。我一直很喜欢戏剧,原以为到了大学就没有机会再接触表演了。但是上海纽约大学给了我惊喜。这所学校会全力支持我们所有的兴趣。
 
The school has given me ample opportunities for leadership. In the fall, I will be taking on the role of Student Body President at NYU Shanghai. I am honored to serve this amazing student body. As president, I hope to continue many of the traditions set up by the inaugural class of 2017. I also want to encourage further integration of international and Chinese students with school-wide events and initiatives. Integration has and will continue to be a difficult journey, but I know how worthwhile it is to set strong foundations at the beginning so that it becomes more natural in the future. I will also be working alongside the elected directors to ensure our students’ residential and school lives are rewarding.
 
学校给了我很多领导的机会。今年秋天,我将接任上海纽约大学学生会主席一职。我感到很荣幸能够为这里出众的学生们服务。作为主席,我希望能够延续2017届学生会设立的各项传统,并鼓励国际学生和中国学生在开展学校层面活动以及主创活动中进一步整合。整合之路不易,但我明白在一开始奠定坚实基础的重要性,这是为未来发展开个好头。我也会和新当选的学生会成员们并肩作战,确保学生们的在校生活和日常生活过得有意义。

I know that the 2015-2016 will be full of challenges and worthwhile experiences. I have already experienced so much in my first year that I cannot begin to imagine what will happen next year. This is the beauty of attending a unique institution like NYU Shanghai – an opportunity you never imagined is always knocking on your door. I have come to accept that I will never know what wonderful thing is just around the corner at this school. The wonderful ambiguity, the embracing of the unknown – this is what being an NYU Shanghai student is all about.

 我知道,2015-2016学年将充满挑战和精彩。在大一的日子里就经历了那么多,我简直无法想象在第二年里将会发生什么。这就是上海纽约大学的美好而独特之处 - 在这里,每时每刻都有让人惊喜的机遇。我承认,我永远不会知道在这个学校的下一个拐角会遇到什么。邂逅美好的惊喜,拥抱未知,这就是上海纽约大学学生所拥有的一切。

 
 
A Conversation with Zhang Jun - Professor of Physics and Mathematics
对话物理与数学教授,张骏



Please give a brief background on yourself. 
请简单介绍一下您自己。

I have been teaching at NYU for 15 years. I began my work here in 1997 as a postdoctoral researcher, and in 2001 I became a professor. 
I think I have remained at NYU for so long because I really enjoy working at this university. NYU is very diverse, always centrally located, I love the Village. Also, my work integrates the two departments of math and physics, and this integration really embodied the spirit of NYU.
 
我在纽约大学任教15年了。1997年起,我作为一名博士后研究员开始在纽约大学工作,并于2001年成为一名教授。我想我之所以会在这里工作这么久,是因为我真的很享受在这里工作。纽约大学非常多元化,又总是坐落在市中心,我很喜欢格林威治村这个地方。而且我的工作将数学和物理两门学科结合在了一起,这种结合正体现了纽约大学的精神。
 

One of NYU Shanghai’s goals is also to foster interdisciplinary discourse not only between the sciences, but the sciences and arts as well. Do you find yourself doing a lot of this?
纽约大学的目标之一就是促进科学学科间的跨学科交流,更要促进科学学科与人文学科的交流互动。您是不是在这方面做了许多工作?

Certainly. In fact, many of the images and visualizations we got from my work have ended up on the covers of books, websites, and as decorations. I’ve worked on several projects with the National Science Foundation on bridging science and art. For example, we did a project on fluid dynamics, where we tracked the movement of air and water, and then used our data to create visualizations. Other projects we did involve the flight behaviors of birds, and patterns created by fish when they’re swimming. We also simulate the movement of continents and create these visually striking images.

当然。事实上,我们从工作中得到的很多影像和成果最终都会出现在书的封面上和网站上,作为一种装饰。我也曾和美国国家科学基金会合作过一些将科学与人文结合起来的特别项目。比如在一个流体动力学项目里,我们监测了空气和水的流动,再把我们的数据影像化。另一些项目包括鸟类飞行行为,以及鱼类游动产生的图形。我们还模拟了大陆漂移,并以此做出了这些富有视觉冲击力的影像。



Our work has been featured in La Monde, The New Yorker, Popular Science, New Scientist, the ABC Evening News, and the Economist. As you can see, the work we do at NYU is not confined to the realm of science.

Do you bring such practical applications of math and physics into your teaching?
您会把这些数学和物理方面的实际应用带入课堂教学当中吗?

Yes. The syllabus for Foundation of Science classes at NYU Shanghai is quite demanding already, but there’s always room to squeeze my research interests into class. For example, in late April of this year, I gave a seminar on my trip to Antarctica, and by the end of the seminar, several students told me they were inspired to switch their concentration to physics. I always try to relate my work and research to my classes in order to inspire students. I think they can see your enthusiasm about your subject.

是的。上海纽约大学科学基础课的教学大纲要求已经很高了,但总还是有空间把我的研究兴趣加进去,带入课堂的。举个例子,今年4月底的时候,我办了一场以我的南极为主题的研讨会。期末时,有几个学生说他们受到了启发,决定把他们将来的学习方向转向物理。我一直努力将我的工作、研究和教学联系起来,以启发学生。我相信他们能看到你对这个学科的热情。

How was Antarctica?
南极是怎样的一个地方?

Cold. [laughs]. Actually I went in December, 2014, which was actually summer there, but the temperature still hovered around freezing the entire time. I went there to research marine life such as krill and pterapods, which are key links in the marine food chain. I spent nearly a month tracking their swimming behavior, and school formations.

很冷(笑)。其实我在2014年12月去的时候,那儿正是夏天,但气温一直在冰点上下。我到那里开展对海洋生物的研究,比如磷虾和翼足目动物,它们是海洋食物链的关键部分。我用了将近一个月的时间监测它们的游动行为和种群结构。

What was life like in Antarctica?
在南极的生活怎么样?

We lived in dorms. It was a semi-military existence. We had a very strict schedule for eating, exercising, and etc. We had to follow all safety and environmental. The physical exam I had to undergo to be cleared to go to Antarctica also took a long time. We had to be trained for how to get out of the research stations, and what to wear to go out and collect samples. When we were on the ship that took us to Antarctica from South America, we would be woken up in the middle of the night by fire drills. It took me five flight transfers to finally get to Punta Arenas (Chile), and then we were on the ship for five days. Since I couldn’t check my email the entire time, I arrived to Antarctica to hundreds of emails in my inbox.

How is the Wifi in Antarctica?
南极的无线网络怎么样?

Slow. There’s no cables there, you now, so we were allowed to use the internet for short emails only, and we couldn’t send files larger than one megabyte. All of the data we collected was moved off of the continent on hard drives.

很慢。那里没有电缆,所以只允许我们使用网络发送一些简短的邮件,传送的文件不能超过1兆。我们收集的所有数据都是存在硬盘里带走的。

Can you tell us about the Foundation of Sciences class you teach at NYU Shanghai?
能讲讲您在上海纽约大学教授的科学基础课程吗?

Foundation of Sciences horizontally integrates the sciences. We cover physics, chemistry, biology, and etcetera. I taught my first biophysics class 15 years ago at NYU on the Square. It’s been my practice to bring my own research into class discussions, plugging in problems to the internal logic of the sciences.

科学基础课程将科学学科进行了横向整合,包括物理、化学、生物等。14年前,我在纽约大学教授了第一堂生物物理课。把研究带入课堂讨论,加入科学内在逻辑的相关问题我的授课风格。

Overall, the students here are quite driven. I think we’ve fostered a good environment, and there’s a collective motivation to learn. It’s all about creating an atmosphere conducive to learning with attention and guidance. I always encourage my students to ask questions in order to nourish the habit of student involvement, and I stop talking before drawing conclusions sometimes in order to give them room to make their own connections. The students here never check their phones in class because they don’t want to miss anything. Sometimes, I have to tell them to calm their excitement, and often four or five people have questions at the same time.

总的来说,这里的学生相当奋发图强。我认为我们营造了一个非常良好的环境,充满学习动力。我们致力于创建的环境有助于学生伴有目标和指导地去学习。我总是鼓励学生问问题,以此培养学生参与的习惯。我有时会在给出结论之前停下来,给学生更多思考的空间。这里的学生从来不会在上课的时候看手机,因为他们不想错过任何东西。有时候,我必须让他们平复激动的情绪,而且经常会出现四五个学生同时提问的情况。

Is there a gap in knowledge between International and Chinese students in math and science?
在数学和科学学科上,国际学生和中国学生是否存在差距呢?

I have to say there is. Chinese students, especially the ones from bigger cities like Beijing or Shanghai are overall better prepared in math and physics. However, I think the students are equally matched in terms of raw interest and motivation. Skill doesn’t mean much without interest and passion, so I wouldn’t take the gap as a sign of anything. They’re still first and second years right now, my goal is to cultivate a continued interest.

我不得不说是有差距的。中国学生,特别是那些来自北京或上海这些大城市的学生,在数学和物理上的总体表现更好一些。但是,我觉得学生们在学习的兴趣和动力上都是一样的。离开了学习的兴趣和热情,单纯的技巧没有太大意义。所以我不会把这些差距当一回事。他们现在还只是大一大二的学生,我的目标是培养他们持久的兴趣。

I would also like to see more opportunities for the students to start working in the laboratory, to see first-hand what research is like. Undergraduates at NYU have the chance to do this, and in a few years, we’ll have our first Senior class. I’d like to take some of them to work, researching, publishing, and discovering new things. I have a 200 square meter lab at ECNU/NYU Shanghai's joint institute, and there I can actually engage in my research interests involving animal locomotion.

我还盼望着学生能有更多参与实验室工作的机会,好让他们亲身体验一下科研到底是怎样的。纽约大学的本科生是有这样的机会的。不久之后,我们就会有第一批大三学生。我想要带他们中的一部分学生一起工作、研究、发表文章和发现新的东西。我在华东师范大学和上海纽约大学的联合研究机构有一个200平方米的实验室,那里是我投身我所感兴趣的关于动物运动研究的地方。

The bigger picture of NYU Shanghai is that of a research university. That’s a large part of why I came here, to do research.

上海纽约大学致力于成为一所研究型大学。做科研,是促使我来到这里的主要原因。



What is your best memory of your time at NYU Shanghai?
能分享一下您在上海纽约大学最美好的回忆吗?

It’s not a memory, as it’s ongoing right now. I just really enjoy the environment here, there’s a sense of community because we’re still so small. The staff, faculty, and students form a kind of small village. Because we’re such a small university, we have to constantly reach out to each other and the community, to form ties. A huge university is more self-sustained, but I think the spirit of NYU Shanghai is that of connection and outreach.

那不是回忆,因为它是现在进行时。我真的很喜欢这里的环境,因为我们校还很小,所以非常有团体意识。员工、教师和学生组成了一个小村庄。因为我们学校的规模小,所以我们要保持互相联系以及对外联系,以扎根社区、系紧纽带。一个规模较大的大学更多的是自我持续发展,但在我看来,上海纽约大学的精神在于联接和拓展。
