Facing Challenges and Embracing Transformation

When my only child flew alone from the United States to Shanghai during the COVID-19 pandemic, the first challenge he faced was spending three weeks in quarantine and the uncertainty of being among the first NYU Shanghai international students to arrive during that time. I admit that I wondered if everything was going to work out, though, of course, I didn't share those concerns with him.

Two years later, when I was able to see him again for the first time, he was both the child I had said goodbye to, and a new man. Fluent in Mandarin, he navigated Shanghai like he had always lived there, pointing out the landmarks, buildings designed by László Hudec, places he wanted to live, and his favorite restaurants. We talked about finance, economics and politics. He had become a man of great curiosity, eager to learn and share what he had learned. He has taught me a lot.

While he has always been determined, he is more focused, patient and compassionate. During my visits, we explore new places in China. Traveling with him, I am amazed by his skill at navigating challenges. He is part tour guide, part translator, part partner in learning everything we can about China. He looks after me, keeping me out of trouble.

NYU Shanghai is only part of his story. Shanghai is his home. NYU Shanghai served as the gateway through which he reached this city. He has grown into himself and chased his dreams in this city. I hope you get to meet him some day. You’ll be impressed!
