Exciting things are happening at NYU Shanghai as our students get back into the swing of things. In this issue, we will have a look at the 2015 Candidate Weekend, have a chat with marketing professor Chen Yuxin and NYU Shanghai sophomore Rewant Prakash, announce the results of the inaugural NYU Shanghai Gift Design Competition, and more. 


在同学们重新投入校园生活之后,精彩的活动又在上海纽约大学上演了。在这期《快讯》中,我们将简要介绍2015年“校园日”活动、对话市场学教授陈宇新以及我们的大二学生Rewant Prakash、上海纽约大学首届礼品设计大赛结果、以及更多有趣的故事。

Candidate Weekend
上海纽约大学“校园日”活动



Throughout February and March, our students, faculty, and staff welcomed 500 Chinese students from across China to our campus during the NYU Shanghai Candidate Weekends. Our visitors attended sample classes, and engaged in interviews with professionals across industries. Applications for the class of 2019 at NYU Shanghai once again showed an upward trend, with 10 Chinese applications for each of the 151 open spots in our next Freshman class. 

在二、三月份举办的上海纽约大学“校园日”中,我们的学生和教职员工迎接了来自全国各地逾500名学生。这些候选学生体验了“样本课堂”,并参加了由各学科教授主持的面试。上海纽约大学2019届申请人数再现上升趋势,在151席中国新生名额中,每一席都有10名学生为之竞争。

We also received thousands of international applicants for the remaining 149 seats. Remarkably, 98 of those seats were filled by early decision applicants, making NYU Shanghai the dream school for two thirds of its next Freshman school.

对于余下的149席国际学生名额,我们也收到了数千份申请。引人注目的是,其中98席已获得提前录取资格。由此,下一届新生中的三分之二已找到了他们梦想的大学——上海纽约大学。


NYU President's Weekend in Beijing
纽约大学校长见面会

On February 3rd, 2015, the NYU community in China had another opportunity to get together and build lasting ties at the NYU President’s Reception in Beijing. Over 150 parents, alumni, and friends of NYU gathered at the Park Hyatt, and were joined by NYU President John Sexton and NYU Shanghai Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Lehman. The event drew nearly 50 parents of students from throughout NYU’s global network. NYU Shanghai parents also attended the event, making this first time parents from our school were represented at an NYU event. Besides giving out many of his famous Presidential hugs, President Sexton spoke about NYU’s vision of a global network university, the university’s future trajectory, and the exciting progress of NYU Shanghai in its new home on Century Avenue. 

2015年2月3日,纽约大学大家庭在中国的成员们借纽约大学校长见面会再度相聚于北京,为永恒的情谊举杯。柏悦酒店里,超过150位家长、校友以及各界友人济济一堂,纽约大学校长John Sexton和上海纽约大学常务副校长Jeffery Lehman 也参与其中。这次活动吸引了将近50位来自纽约大学全球教育体系的学生家长。上海纽约大学的家长们也通过这次见面会第一次参与了纽约大学的活动中。除了献出许多著名的“校长式”拥抱外,Sexton校长还谈了纽约大学全球教育体系的理念,学校今后的发展道路以及上海纽约大学在世纪大道这个新家里取得的激动人心的进步。

People's Daily Profile on NYU Shanghai

In February, 2015, People's Daily Newspaper published an in-depth profile of NYU Shanghai. The article lauds the progress of our school as a positive step in China's ongoing higher education reform. Reporters interviewed NYU Shanghai students and faculty for a personal perspective on life at our university. Other topics covered in the profile include the leadership dynamic at NYU Shanghai, our curriculum, how our library system works, the recent Hackathon hosted on our campus, and more. 


2015年2月,《人民日报》上刊登了一篇深度剖析上海纽约大学的文章。文章赞许了学校取得的进展,体现了中国高等教育改革迈出了重要的一步。记者采访了上海纽约大学的学生和教职人员,并展现了他们在学校的生活。除此之外,文章还报道了上海纽约大学管理人员之间的密切合作、我们的课程、图书馆系统以及近期在校举办的“创客上海”等。

The First Sino-Foreign Joint Venture University: What Does This “Foreign University” Look Like



“看起来像一个巨大的、有很多开放空间的苹果商店”,这是一名大二学生对学校的第一印象。
 
“It looks like a huge Apple Store with many open spaces.” Such was the first impression of one sophomore at Shanghai New York University (NYU Shanghai).

世纪大道1555号,位于上海陆家嘴黄金宝地,在鳞次栉比的商务楼宇中间,若不认识它紫底白花的校徽,很容易将这幢不起眼的建筑错过。

Number 1555 Century Avenue is situated at the heart of Shanghai's Lujiazui. Standing among many tall commercial skyscrapers, one might easily miss the NYU Shanghai building if it were not for the university’s eye-catching purple and white logo.

 
这幢只有15层高的建筑,就是上海纽约大学——每年招生不过300人,但关注教育的人不会忽视它的存在,这是美国纽约大学与华东师范大学的合作结晶,也是国内第一所中美合作举办的大学。中国高等教育也许并不在乎再多一所大学,但它是中国高等教育开放自信、包容发展的一个注脚。

Fifteen stories high, this is NYU Shanghai; thought it is small, with an enrollment of no more than 300 students in each class, it has drawn the eye of everyone in the world of education. It is a marriage between American university, New York University (NYU) and East China Normal University (ECNU), and was the first Sino-US joint venture university in China upon its inception. China may not necessarily need one more university, but this one represents the openness, confidence, diversity, and development of Chinese higher education. 

 
从2011年宣布筹建,到已有两级本科生在读,这条“中美混血”的“鲶鱼”,到底有哪些不一样?又带来了哪些冲击波?


Since its establishment in 2011, the university has admitted two classes of undergraduate students. How is NYU Shanghai, a Chinese-American “catalyst", different from other Chinese universities? What changes might it bring to China?  

 
差点“崩溃” 一个新生的初体验
Almost “breaking down” – A freshman’s first experience

 
 “只有十几位同学的小课,不用提前占座;晚上宿舍不拉电,图书馆不关门,深夜一两点还有很多人在看书;随时都能预约老师一对一辅导……”大一学生钱宇晗细数“不一样”。

"It's very different." Freshman Qian Yu describes, “classes with fewer than 20 students, plenty of space, so there is no need to rush for classroom seats in advance, electricity that is not switched off at night, a library that's open 24 hours, classmates who study past midnight, and faculty who make themselves available for one-on-one appointments at anytime.”

 
两年前,小钱还是浙江嘉兴忙着“刷题”的高三学生,在去听上海纽约大学招生宣讲会之前,对该校一无所知。纽约大学校长约翰·塞克斯通劝缺少勇气的懦弱者不要报考;上纽大常务副校长杰弗里·雷蒙希望学生“对世界万物都有强烈好奇心”。华东师范大学校长陈群则说,愿意积极参与的学生,适合到上纽大。
 

Two years ago, Qian was a high school senior in Jiaxing city, Zhejiang Province; she was preparing for the Gao Kao. She wasn’t familiar with NYU Shanghai before attending one of the school's admission events. John Sexton, President of NYU, advised people who lack courage not to consider NYU Shanghai. Jeffrey Lehman, Vice Chancellor of NYU Shanghai, hoped that students would have “curiosity for everything in the world.” Chen Qun, President of ECNU, said that NYU Shanghai would be perfect for students who thrive in an active learning environment.

Qian was moved, “Their definition of success was very different!”

 
申请上海纽约大学,也不一样:填表时重要的一栏是有过哪些实践活动,还得从60个题目中选一个写“我”的故事。“这逼着我仔细掂量有记忆以来的人生,哪些事做得有意义——我第一次正视应试以外的能力。”

NYU Shanghai's admission process is also different. One of the more important parts of the application asks students about extracurricular activities, and one of 60 designated essay topics includes a personal statement focused on the applicants' personal stories. As one student said of this personal statement, “it forced me to think about my life and what is meaningful to me. It was the first time I ever thought seriously about my abilities beyond studying.” 

 

初选出的470位同学还参加了“校园日”:正装出席的欢迎晚宴,一对一面试,团队活动,模拟课堂听课互动。小钱发现,教授并不关注哪个小组作品更优秀,而更加在意他们在过程中的想法和互动表现。模拟课堂,教授总能指出学生回答的闪光点,让他们觉得被尊重。爸爸来接她,小钱确定地说:“我喜欢这里!”

470 selected students attended a “Candidate Weekend” that featured a welcome dinner in formal attire, one-on-one interviews, team activities, and sample classes with student/professor interactions. Qian observed that professors cared more about how teams thought and how they acted. In the sample class, professors always found something meaningful from the students’ answers, giving students a sense of being respected. Following the Candidate Weekend, Qian firmly told her father, “I like it here!”

 
小钱有幸成为151位拿到录取通知书的中国学生之一,但却在开学不久后差点“崩溃”。

Qian was one of the 151 lucky Chinese students who were admitted. However, she remembers almost “breaking down” shortly after the first semester began. 

全英文教学环境,要大量阅读、听懂专业课、跟上讨论并表达观点,开学才两周就要交一篇小论文。小钱发现高中学到的只是应试英语,她被国际学生活跃的讨论吓蒙了。

In the all-English learning environment, students had to complete numerous readings, understand discipline-specific classes, follow discussions in class as well as express their own views, and start submitting papers two weeks after the semester begins. Qian realized the English she learned in high school would only help her pass English exams, and she felt pressure to raise her performance when compared to international students who were more outgoing in class.

 
焦虑的小钱去了学校6楼的学生健康中心,那个温暖封闭的小环境,有懒人沙发和小点心,还有来自美国的心理咨询师,陪她度过了最沮丧孤独的时光。
 
Experiencing anxiety, Qian reached out to the university Health and Wellness office on the sixth floor of the university building. The office is welcoming and private, where students can sit on a comfortable sofa, have cookies, and get support from a professional psychological consultant from the United States. The office helped her through her most lonely and depressing days.

她直接告诉一位教授,“您语速太快,我听不懂”,教授下一节课就做了调整;她不知如何写论文,一次次写邮件、预约面谈,教授及时鼓励,“找不到合适的词没关系,重要的是你的观点”;她几次向外国同学请教“答案”,对方诧异,“没有对错,你只要理性表达自己的想法”……

She made adjustments in her study habits. She told a professor, “You talked too fast, and I couldn't follow you”, and the professor adjusted the speed in the next class. She did not know how to write a paper, so she met with her professor after making an appointment by e-mail. She was encouraged when the professor told her, “your opinion is more important than what words you use.” She talked to her international classmates, seeking a “right answer”, but was told, “there is no right or wrong, as long as you can support your ideas with well reasoned logic.”

 
第一个学期末,小钱三门功课拿了A。她从一页纸小文章的不知所云到能顺利完成6页纸论文;她设计调查问卷,在街头拦下陌生“老外”做规范的“研究性学术采访”;她能够论述亚当·斯密和荀子观点的异同;她学会倾听和鼓励他人……

At the end of her first semester, Qian had earned A's in three classes. She had transformed herself from not knowing how to begin a paper to being able to write a six-page paper without difficulty. She has designed research surveys and interviewed foreigners on the street. She can now fully discuss the similarities and differences between Adam Smith and Xun Zi. She has learned how to listen and encourage others.

 
“被压抑的个性复活啦!在高中,我们老在嚼别人嚼过的东西。在这里,我只要成为我自己!”小钱说。

“My personality has been set free! In high school, we were always learning what everyone else has already learned, but here my only mission is to become myself!” Qian said.

 
差点“崩溃”的,还有其他学生,甚至家长。

Qian’s experience is not unique. Other students and even parents have had similar “breaking down” moments.

学校强制规定,不管是住宿还是社团,国际学生和中国学生必须“混搭”。因为个性、习惯迥异,有的中国学生“痛苦万分”,闹着要重择室友。有时学生已相安无事,家长却闹个不休,坚决要给孩子调换寝室。开学典礼的提问环节,中国家长不断纠结于“文凭”问题,让国外家长一脸困惑。

The university requires “mixing” of international students and Chinese students in dorms and student organizations. Some Chinese students have had difficulty adjusting to their international roommates because of differences in personality and habit, and have requested to change roommates. Sometimes, even when the students themselves have no issue with each other, parents have insisted on changing roommates. Additionally, parents of international students have been quite confused by the repeated questions from Chinese parents about “diplomas” during the Commencement ceremony.

一年多后,中外学生从各自扎堆、偶有小摩擦到和谐共处、取长补短,家长们也开始对孩子明显的进步感到欣慰。上海纽约大学校长俞立中很自豪:“有华东师大老师说,上纽大学生走在校园里,很容易被一眼认出,气场不一样!”

One year later, students have transformed, from socializing within their own groups to stepping out of their comfort zones, from having arguments to respecting and learning from each other. Their parents have been delighted to witness the changes. Chancellor Yu said proudly, “Some ECNU professors have said that NYU Shanghai students are immediately identifiable on campus, because they are so unique!”

 
相当“奢侈” 28位学术“大牛”的加盟
A “Luxurious” University furnished with 28 distinguished professors

杰弗里·雷蒙背对着窗外上海陆家嘴楼群,在用树根雕成的中国茶几前,娴熟地用紫砂壶和铁观音冲泡着功夫茶,淡淡的茶香汩汩渗入正午的阳光。办公室满堂的中式家具不知经过多少人的摩挲,在他温存的注视下熠熠生辉,那都是他的私人藏品。 

Seated in front of his Chinese style tea table carved from a single tree stump with Lujiazui’s myriad skyscrapers looming behind him through the window, Jeffrey Lehman drops Tieguanyin tea leaves into a zisha pot and leaves them steeping in hot water. He knows the steps to the Chinese Gongfu Tea Ceremony. Soon, the faint aroma of the tea permeates his office. Placed throughout his office are many pieces of traditional Chinese furniture from his personal collection; they glow under the midday sun, and their owner's gentle gaze. 
   
自从1998年首次走进中国,他就为这个“奇迹般的”国度深深着迷。 

Since his first visit in 1998, Lehman has been hooked, not only on Chinese tea and furniture, but everything else in this "miraculous" country. 
   
“有没有人说过您很像比尔·盖茨?”当年上海浦西一家酒店的行李员好奇发问,让他惊异极了:“我一直以为中国依旧封闭,可这里几乎所有人都知道盖茨长什么样。天哪!中国已经向全世界开放,而美国对此一无所知!”

Recounting a funny story that took place on that first trip when he was staying in a hotel in Puxi, Shanghai, a porter working there astonished him by asking, “Has anyone ever told you that you look like Bill Gates?” Lehman continued, “I thought China was strictly enforcing its closed-door policy, yet everyone here knew what Bill Gates looked like! China had opened its doors to the world, yet the US was completely unaware."

 
那次访华改变了他的一生。“中国正以前所未有的速度迅猛发展,简直难以相信我所看到的这一切。我告诉我的美国同事,所有人都应该去中国看看。”

“China was developing at an unprecedented rate. I couldn't believe everything I was witnessing. Upon returning, I told all my American colleagues they had to visit China,” added Lehman. According to him, the trip was “life-changing.”

对曾任康奈尔大学校长的雷蒙来说,上海纽约大学常务副校长的职位,像是量身定做。       

As a former President of Cornell University, the position of Vice Chancellor at NYU Shanghai seems to have been tailored specifically for Lehman. 

纽约大学在努力构建全球教育体系,在世界14个大城市建立了海外教学点或海外校区。“上海纽约大学的建立,意味着纽约大学的转型成为现实。没有我们,没有中国,纽约大学绝不能被称为具有全球性。”雷蒙笑着说,“中国也正在寻求向顶尖高等教育的转型,建设真正具有国际水准的高等教育,我们带来了这样的合作机会。”

Against the background of New York University’s ambition to establish a global network and its success in building study-away sites and campuses in 14 major cities across the world, Lehman spoke of the significance in founding NYU Shanghai with a smile, “It is a signal that NYU has accomplished its transition. Without the participation of China, it by would by no means be globalized. On the other hand, China is also seeking world-class higher education, hence this opportunity for collaboration.”

 
“综合对不同文化和观点的认识,摆脱‘美国中心论’的思维定势,这非常重要,一个全球教育体系可以让学生自由流动。”纽约大学斯特恩商学院金融学教授珍妮弗·卡朋特这样认识上海纽约大学的意义。

Jennifer Carpenter, Professor of Finance at NYU’s Stern School of Business, echoed Lehman, “It is of paramount importance to integrate different opinions and cultures, and to dispel Americentrism. A globalized educational system allows students to exchange with others freely.”

 
雷蒙全力以赴从全球延揽明星教授。他双手捧给记者一张纸,珍重又紧张,仿佛捧着一件稀世珍宝,“这张表上的28位教授,都是世界级‘大牛’!”600名本科生拥有28位世界级教授,相当“奢侈”,连美国纽约大学学生也没有如此“待遇”。

Lehman has spared no effort in recruiting renowned professors from all over the globe. Passing a piece of paper to us with both of his hands, as if it were a priceless ancient painting, he states, “This is a list of 28 professors, all of whom are renowned in their respective spheres.” It is hard to believe that a university of only 600 students could be so rich in world-famous experts—even those studying at NYU’s main campus cannot enjoy such a privilege.

吸引明星教授,要有一个做最具有创造力、最重要研究工作的环境。雷蒙说:“15年前,中国资源短缺,教授们会来访问,但不会想移居这里。现在,中国有丰富的资源,可以为世界级教授创造世界级工作环境。我们拥有获诺贝尔奖的教授,但更希望找到年轻的学者,能以在上海纽约大学的研究成果去争取诺贝尔奖!”

Nothing is more important than a creative, research-oriented environment when attracting distinguished professors. “When China was short of resources 15 years ago, scholars would agree to visit, but no one wanted to stay. Now China is able to offer everything you need for an excellent working environment. We have Nobel Laureates among our faculty, but we are in fact more eager for junior experts who can use their research projects at NYU Shanghai to compete for the Nobel Prize,” said Lehman.

 
教授中不少是全球知名的华人学者,如美国艺术与科学院院士、数学家林芳华和神经科学家汪小京等。来自纽约大学的数学教授惊叹于中国学生的数学天赋,这让他们的教学和研究有比在美国多得多的“知音”。华东师大为教授们提供了国际水平的实验室,浦东还有国际先进的上海光源、超算中心等大型科研平台,对明星教授颇具吸引力。

Among these professors are distinguished Chinese scholars, including mathematician Lin Fang-Hua, a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and neuroscientist Wang Xiao-Jing. Mathematics professors from NYU have been surprised at the talent of Chinese students, and have found themselves enjoying teaching and conducting research here moreso than in the US. Also attractive to experts are the world-class laboratories at ECNU, the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation facility, and the Supercomputing Center located in Pudong.

雷蒙困惑的是研究项目投入的不同标准。中国往往不太在意研究团队的参差不齐,只要领衔教授具有高水平,就能得到支持。国际标准则不同,所有申请者都需在同一水平线上。他还有一个苦恼:很多教授需要优秀的博士后参与研究。但中国支付博士后的薪水微薄,远低于国际标准,难以吸引青年才俊。“几个月前我们设立了一个基金,可以补齐他们的薪水。”他顽皮地眨眨眼,“也有好消息,我们能得到中国政府的研究拨款啦,因为上海纽约大学是中国的大学嘛,中国政府也会重视我们的研究成果。”

Lehman has sometimes encountered difficulty recruiting researchers. One reason for this is that in contrast to other countries, research leaders in China rarely pay much attention in selecting their staff. This is partly because their own fame and prior achievements are enough to secure funding. There are many professors, of course, who need qualified post-doctoral candidates for their projects, yet they soon realize these people are hard to find. The government pays post-doctoral students far below international standards, which often discourages PhD graduates from seeking out post-doctoral positions. “But we are in good spirits. Several months ago we established a fund so that these junior staff can earn a decent salary,” said Lehman. “We also anticipate funding from the Chinese government. The government definitely values our research, since NYU Shanghai is part of China’s higher education system too.”     

 
两个多小时的交谈,雷蒙反复提及,“我们在创造历史!”他供职过的康奈尔大学,曾培养过胡适等名人,“康奈尔在19世纪创建时,关于大学教育的理念是革命性的。上海纽约大学在21世纪的意义堪比康奈尔大学之于19世纪的意义。”

“We are making history.” Lehman said repeatedly in his two-hour interview with us. Many famous Chinese individuals have been educated at Cornell University, where Lehman used to work. “When Cornell was founded in the nineteenth century, its concept of higher education was revolutionary. NYU Shanghai’s concept of higher education is no less so in the 21st century.”

雷蒙认为:“世界的未来取决于中国发展的成功与否,中国需要一个让年轻人才发挥自身创造力的教育系统,我们正在为此努力。上海纽约大学对美国纽约大学和中国高等教育都具有冲击性。这里的一切刚刚萌芽,能亲身参与其中,真是激动人心!”

He also believes that “the future of the world relies on China’s development, for which an education system that allows young people to fulfill their full potential is indispensable. This is exactly what we are going for. The establishment of NYU Shanghai will no doubt have a profound impact both on NYU and on China’s higher education. Everything here is growing and I'm so excited to be a part of it.”

不同而“和”“两个身体、一个脑袋”
Harmony among differences – “Two bodies, one mind”

“毕竟是中西携手,你和俞立中校长有没有吵过架?”

“Given the difficulty of collaboration between China and the West, have you ever quarreled with Chancellor Yu Lizhong?”

 
雷蒙听了哈哈大笑,连连摇头,他用“sweet(甜蜜)”来形容他的中国同僚。
Lehman shook his head and burst into laughter. He described his Chinese colleague as “sweet.”

 
面对争议,“我们会讨论怎样既合乎中国国情,又融汇纽约大学精神”。两人曾在课外活动经费投入上有分歧:中国大学一般不会花太多经费在学生俱乐部、体育活动上,但美国大学这方面花费甚巨。俞立中对雷蒙说,谨慎投入为好,要让学生成为领导型人才,意味着让他们更自立和成熟。投入太大,或许会被家长认为是浪费。最后双方妥协,这笔开销高于中国大学,但又少于美国纽约大学。

He told us when faced with disagreements, “We would work out a solution that took into consideration both Chinese traditions and the NYU spirit.” For example, they once debated over how much money to allocate to student activities. Chinese universities seldom invest resources into students clubs or sports while American universities invest substantial funds. While acknowledging the importance extracurricular activities in helping students mature and develop independence, Chancellor Yu insisted they must be cautious for fear of parents thinking that university officers were wasting money. Finally, a compromise was made: the amount of money allocated to student activities would fall between the standards at American and Chinese universities. 

 
和杰弗里·雷蒙的办公室风格迥异,校长俞立中办公室陈设都是朴素的西式办公桌椅。身材颀长的俞立中形容说:“我和雷蒙是‘两个身体、一个脑袋’,充分沟通,不同而‘和’。”

Unlike Lehman’s Chinese-style office, Chancellor Yu’s office is furnished with modern, Western desks and chairs. Chancellor Yu said, “Lehman and I are ‘two bodies, one mind’; through communication and frank discussion, we are always able to achieve harmony in the end.”

 
俞立中同样有一种创造历史的使命感:“中国高等教育并不在乎再多一所大学,我们需要的是高质量的教育、高水平的大学、有特色的办学,需要的是改革的勇气和路径。上海纽约大学的全球化教育模式只是‘多元化’中的‘一元’。”

Chancellor Yu shares Lehman's sense of mission. He said, “Another mediocre university will make no difference to China. What we crave is one that has the courage to move towards reform, one that offers high-quality education with its own unique features. NYU Shanghai's globalized education model is but one way to diversify."

 
他提供了一个细节诠释全球化教育:一个学生通过电脑检索发现美国纽约大学图书馆有她想读的书籍,便发出邮件借阅,4天后,书就寄到了她手上。而俞立中下学期与纽约大学阿布扎比校区教授合作的课程,两地的教授和学生将通过网络视频同步互动教学。

To demonstrate how the NYU's global network functions, Chancellor Yu related the experience of a student at NYU Shanghai. She submitted a request to the library after learning that a book she wanted to read was held in a library at NYU in New York. Four days later, the book arrived in Shanghai from New York, waiting for her to it pick up. In addition, Chancellor Yu said that he was going to co-teach a course with a professor based in NYU Abu Dhabi next semester. Instructors and students will be able to interact with each other through video chat.

 
采访俞立中的那天,恰逢国家宣布新设天津、广东、福建自贸区,而中国(上海)自由贸易区也从不到30平方公里扩容了四倍多,浦东金桥、张江高科和陆家嘴都纳入其中。在全球化、信息化的时代,中国最缺什么?俞立中一语中的:“缺国际化人才——真正具有全球视野、理解和包容不同文化,能与不同文化背景的人沟通、交流和合作的人才。我们的高等教育跟不上时代要求啊!”

On the day we interviewed Chancellor Yu, China announced the establishment of free trade areas in Tianjin, Guangdong and Fujian. Meanwhile, the size of the one in Shanghai was quadrupled, with the addition of three new regions, namely, Pudong Jinqiao, Zhangjiang High-technology Zone and Lujiazui. Chancellor Yu has always had a clear notion of the types of individuals that China urgently needs in this globalized, information era, “We need people who have broad horizons, who understand, tolerate and appreciate different cultures, and who are able to communicate and collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds. But regular Chinese universities fail to train their graduates according to the demands of a new century.”

 
和其他中国高校不同,上纽大多出了一个“合规与风险管理部门”,负责研究中国相关的法律法规和政策制度以及美国纽约大学的相关管理条例,监督和保证学校合规运行及进行风险管理。2014年年初的合规审计,就发现了68个不同级别的风险。如,原来很多部门都有公章,带来不少隐患,现在收归学校保管,盖章必须依法依规。学校还制定了严格的礼品接受和赠予政策等。
 
Another additional feature of NYU Shanghai that most regular Chinese universities lack is a department of Compliance and Risk Management. It is responsible for studying Chinese laws and regulations as well as NYU’s regulations so as to guarantee that NYU Shanghai is complying with all regulations in its operations. At the beginning of 2014, a compliance audit revealed 68 levels of risks. For instance, many departments have their own seals. Given the potential perils, the university has them held in one central location in order to avoid misuse. Additionally, regulations were formulated concerning gift exchange.

Chancellor Yu said, “Self-regulation, compliance with the law, and a clear notion of risk are essential for running a modern university.”

 
不久前,一个原来的学生来上海看望俞立中,拎了一盒家乡的黑木耳,他赶紧去学校礼品店买了一件棒球服回赠,并向办公室主任“交代”礼物的来龙去脉。“就是老朋友送礼,我都会向对方说清楚,坚决不能收。人家要是扔下就跑,我只能上交。”

Not long ago, one of Chancellor Yu’s former students visited him in Shanghai and gave him a box of fungus as a present. Yu hurried to the university’s souvenir shop, where he bought a baseball cap as a return gift to the student. Soon after, Yu turned over the food to the department’s inspectors and disclosed the entire gift exchange. “I will never accept a gift from anyone, even if s/he is an old friend. I always explain our policies to them. If they leave a gift without telling me first, the only thing I can do is turn the gifts over to higher authorities.”

没有“不能”俩学生的“创客马拉松”
Nothing is “Impossible” – two students organize a Hackathon

来自北京的大二学生黄瀚涛和美国学生、编程高手肯尼交上了朋友,神侃之后,联手办了一件大事——中国首次面向大学生的“Hackathon(创客马拉松)”大赛。

Two NYU Shanghai students, Huang Hantao, a sophomore from Beiing, and Kenny, a programming whiz from the United States befriended each other. Out of that friendship, they built something significant, organizing the first Hackathon in China open to college students.

 
同类的比赛,国内另两所知名高校的学生早就在商谈承办,却因为需要学生会、团委、财务等层层审批而迟迟未动。黄瀚涛们的梦想却很快变成现实。一开始,他们连发邮件争取资助受挫,俞立中就介绍了几家企业,但商谈、操办都是学生自己的事儿。

Students at two other renowned Chinese universities also had wanted to organize such an event for ages, but their plans never came to fruition because they required approvals from various offices such as the Student Union, the University Chinese Communist Party Youth League, and the Finance Office. Huang’s dream, however, came true quite quickly. Although at first their requests for financial support were met with rejections from potential sponsors, Chancellor Yu introduced them to some other companies, then the students handled all communication, negotiation , and organization work from there. 

 
小黄和肯尼牵头一个由12名同学组成的小社团,向全球高校广发“英雄帖”。5个月里,黄瀚涛写了1200封邮件,穿上正装与人谈判,学着利用各种资源。“创客”吸引了全球1000多名大学生报名,包括哈佛、麻省理工、哥伦比亚大学以及北大、清华、复旦等高校学子。最终250名大学生通过筛选到上海参赛。在31家赞助商支持下,他们为所有来自上海之外的参赛者承担下交通费用。包括知名投行、信息技术企业在内的多家赞助商表示,来年再办,还会支持。

Huang and Kenny led a group of 12 students and sent invitations to universities all around the world. Within five months, Huang had written 1,200 emails, conducted formal negotiations, and learned to use all kinds of resources. The Hackathon attracted applications from over a thousand students around the world, including ones from Harvard, MIT, Columbia, Peking University, Tsinghua, and Fudan. 250 students were selected to participate in the event at Shanghai. 31 sponsors, including renowned investment banks and high-tech companies, covered travel expenses for all non-local participants. Some sponsors affirmed they would be willing to sponsor the event again next year. 

“再办任何国际会议、大型活动我们都没问题!”黄瀚涛自信满满,“我学会了重要一课——主动争取机会,主动学习,主动参与科研和社会实践。” 去年暑假,黄瀚涛还争取到由以色列政府提供全额奖学金的特拉维夫大学交流项目,获益匪浅,更让他的梦想从进投行变成了自主创业。

“We are capable of hosting international conferences and big events!” Huang said with confidence. “I’ve learned an important lesson – be proactive in seizing opportunities, learning, participating in research, as well as extracurricular activities."  Last summer, Huang joined a Tel Aviv University exchange program with a full scholarship from the Israeli government. He benefited greatly from the program and has now changed his dream from working for an investment bank to pursuing entrepreneurship.

“The world is our major,” Huang shares the same spirit with Yu Lizhong. “Our faculty and students come from all around the world. We need to learn how to understand differences and to respect others.” 

 
这个新生的“混血儿”开始赢得认同。从第一、二年国际招生看,在纽约大学所有申请者中,已有超过1/4的学生希望来上海纽约大学就读。学校已录取的学生中,半数来自美国,其余来自全球40多个国家。其中不乏拒绝了常春藤名校录取通知的“牛孩”。

This “mixed” university is also receiving wider recognition. In the first and second years of international admissions, more than a quarter of students applying to NYU wanted to study at NYU Shanghai. Among the admitted international students, half come from the United States and the rest come from more than 40 countries. Many students rejected offers from Ivy League universities to come to Shanghai.

A university without walls

“要努力把上海纽约大学办成高等教育国际合作示范改革的试验田、高水平的世界一流大学。”对中国以及上海市来说,引入上海纽约大学这条“鲶鱼”,另有醉翁之意。

“We shall set NYU Shanghai as an experiment for international cooperation on higher education reform, and build it into a world-class university.” China and Shanghai apparently expect more from the "catalyst" that is NYU Shanghai.

ECNU, NYU Shanghai's Chinese partner, has been inspired by the university's campus events. In addition, starting in 2013, ECNU modified its student enrollment interview session: from a group of faculty interviewing a single student to a one-on-one interview. ECNU has also added a student presentation section for candidates and also provides a lounge and refreshments to students.

Fudan University, a long-time pioneer in China and one of the first universities in the country to conduct general education, has invited Lehman to share his thoughts and discuss with Fudan University faculty about ideas and practices of general education at NYU Shanghai. 

 
华东师大每学期派出一批青年教师在上纽大随堂听课,给他们带来震撼:分组讨论的激烈碰撞,学生每周课后大约要花16个小时在阅读、写作上,《科学基础》居然由物理学、化学、生物学三门学科教授联袂授课……

Every semester, a group of young faculty from ECNU sit in on NYU Shanghai classes. They have been impressed by what they have seen – intense group discussions in class, students spending an average of 16 hours a week on reading and writing, and a Foundation of Science course jointly taught by faculty in physics, chemistry and biology.

NYU Shanghai’s curriculum also features various Chinese elements. Professor Yu Zhenhua, Chair of the ECNU Department of Philosophy, is teaching a course about Chinese traditional wisdom and its transformation in modern times for NYU, which can be taken by students at all NYU campuses. On the weekends, he takes his students to visit the Confucius Temple, Chenghuang Temple, Jade Buddha Temple and other historical sites including the sites of the first and second conferences of the Chinese Communist Party, so that they may be better exposed to the cultures of Confucius, Buddhism and Daoism, as well as modern Chinese history. Some people have told Yu Zhenhua that the reading load of a NYU Shanghai student in one semester, which ranges from Lao Zi, Confucius, Mencius to Plato, Aristotle and Marx, is more than students from other universities might have over all four years. From this, Yu Zhenhua extrapolates, “We (Chinese universities) need to enhance training in reading classics and writing.”

This university does not have walls, and just like Shen Xiaoming, Party Secretary of Pudong New District said, Pudong is NYU Shanghai’s campus. The university has set up a mechanism to share resources and cooperate with the Pudong New District Financial Services Bureau, the Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone Management Office, the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, and Yuanshen Stadium. It has established the Pudong Forum on Economics, Business and Finance. It has created the Volatility Institute at NYU Shanghai under the direction of a Nobel Laureate Professor Robert Engle from NYU's Stern School of Business. Moreover, it is trying to build a mechanism of dialogue between Wall Street and Lujiazui through efforts from the NYU Board of Trustees.

NYU Names Andrew Hamilton 16th President

On March 18th, he Board of Trustees of New York University announced the appointment of Vice Chancellor Andrew Hamilton—the University of Oxford’s senior officer, a noted chemist, a Fellow of the Royal Society, and the former Provost of Yale—as the 16th president of New York University. He will officially take up his duties in January 2016.

Professor Hamilton’s selection follows an eight-month, international search process conducted by a Search Committee of trustees, faculty, students, and administrators. The Committee—which began the search with over 200 nominees—unanimously recommended Professor Hamilton to the Board of Trustees.

Andrew Hamilton has been Vice Chancellor of the University of Oxford since 2009. Prior to that, he was the Provost of Yale University, where he was also the Benjamin Silliman Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry; he joined the Yale faculty in 1997. He joined the University of Pittsburgh in 1988, where was a tenured Professor of Chemistry and Chair of the Chemistry Department. Before joining the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh, he was an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Princeton University.

His area of scholarly interest lies at the intersection of organic and biologic chemistry, with particular focus on the use of synthetic design for the understanding, mimicry, and potential disruption of biological processes. He is widely published and the recipient of numerous awards and honors. Among his many honors and awards, he is the recipient of the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award from the American Chemical Society, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2004, he was elected a member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he was the 2011 winner of the International Izatt-Christiansen Award for Macrocyclic Chemistry.

We are thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of the NYU Shanghai Gift Design Competition. We received 17 wonderful entries from 19 contestants, and were truly wowed by the creativity of students at NYU Shanghai! Our judges based their decisions on four key criterion: feasibility, innovation, aesthetics, and functionality. After much deliberation, we are proud to announce the following winners:

My name is Rewant and I come from India. I grew up in Lucknow which was once the capital of Mughal Empire, and most famous for its food and culture. Since childhood, I have been exposed to a lot of customs and traditions which played an important role in defining who I am today, but I’m far from a person who is bound by these customs and traditions. I also prefer to keep myself occupied with a lot of extracurricular activities, both on-campus and off-campus, which is the reason why I have always been involved in a lot of clubs and different school activities.

我的名字叫Rewant,来自印度。我在勒克瑙长大,那里曾是莫卧儿帝国的首都,而最为出名的是那里的美食和文化。从童年起我就接触到了很多不同的习俗和传统,我的成长受其影响很大,但我并不会被这些习俗和传统束缚。我喜欢参加许多课外活动,包括校内和校外,这也是我总是参与很多社团和校际活动的原因。
 

 

 

I am especially interested in theatre and performing arts. Before I began my freshman year at NYU Shanghai, I contacted all the theatre companies in Shanghai asking them if they had any work or volunteer opportunities available for college students. After waiting for months, an amateur theatre company got back to me and asked if I could get involved in their next production.

我对戏剧和表演艺术尤其感兴趣。在我开始上海纽约大学的大一学年之前,我联系了上海所有的戏剧公司,询问有没有提供给大学生的工作或志愿者机会。等待数月之后,一个业余戏剧公司回复了我,问我能不能参与他们的下一部话剧。
 

I am majoring in Interactive Media Arts (IMA) at NYU Shanghai. Before choosing the IMA track as my major, I was also following the Business and Finance track, and Neuroscience track that involved following the Foundation of Science (FOS) curriculum. While I enjoyed taking both Business and Science classes, my creative intellect wasn’t being challenged. I decided to take a few IMA classes and fell in love with what I was doing in that major.

我在上海纽约大学主修互动媒体艺术(IMA)专业。选择这个专业之前,我学习过商业与金融,还尝试过包括科学基础课程的神经科学专业。虽然我很享受学习商业和科学课程,但我觉得我的创造性思维并未受到挑战。我决定上一些IMA的课程,结果就爱上了我在这个专业中所做的事情。

IMA gave me a platform to further cultivate my creative intellect and interest in wearable technology and projection mapping. I have especially been intrigued by wearable technology and the potential it holds in near future. For the final project of one of my IMA class, I created a glove that measures pulse-rate and body temperature of a person in less than 10 seconds, and shows the data on a small screen attached on top of the glove.  This was the first time I had created wearable technology myself, but is definitely not the last time. What I really appreciate about the IMA Department at NYU Shanghai is that they always encourage students to be innovative and motivate them to use their creative intellect.

For most part of my high school education, I had never considered studying outside India as an option after graduating high school. The whole concept of studying abroad was strange and new to me as no one in our high school had done that in the past decade. I, along with two other ambitious friends in a class of 300 students, decided to apply to a few colleges outside India and break the mainstream custom of only applying to Indian colleges.


在我高中生涯的大部分时间里,我从来没有考虑过毕业之后要到印度之外的地方去学习。海外求学的概念对我来说既陌生又新奇,因为在过去的十年里,我的高中没有出过一个这样的人。在我毕业那一届的300余名学生中,我和另两个雄心勃勃的学生决定申请国外的一些大学,打破只申请印度国内大学的主流风气。
 

When I first received my acceptance email from  NYU Shanghai, I was not as excited as I thought I would be. I was a little skeptical about attending a newly established college in China. While I was waiting to hear back from other colleges, NYU Shanghai invited me to attend the Admitted Students Weekend in Shanghai to discuss NYU Shanghai and meet other students who would comprise the inaugural class. I decided to attend the admitted students weekend and get to know more about NYU’s newly established institute. During my short stay in Shanghai, I was left completely mesmerized by the city and the amazing people I had met from all around the world. NYU Shanghai was giving students an opportunity to receive world-class education in a city like Shanghai, full of energy and potential. After returning back home I knew where I would be spending my next 4 years of college and immediately enrolled into NYU Shanghai without any second thoughts.

当我第一次收到来自上海纽约大学的录取邮件时,我并没有想象中那么激动。对于进入一所中国新成立的大学我还抱有一丝怀疑。当我在等待其他大学的回复时,上海纽约大学邀请我参加在上海举行的国际学生校园日,共同聊一聊上海纽约大学,并和第一届的学生们见面。我决定参加这个活动,以便了解更多有关这个纽约大学新在上海新建的学校的情况。在上海停留的短短几天里,我深深地为这个城市和这群来自世界各地、令人惊叹的人们所着迷。上海纽约大学在上海这座充满能量和潜力的城市,为学生们提供了一个接受世界级教育的机会,回家之后我便知道我该去哪里度过四年的大学生活,于是我毫不犹豫地立刻加入了上海纽约大学。
 

I have had many rewarding experiences at NYU Shanghai so far, but the one which had the most impact on me was working for an amateur theatre company. Ever since the first semester of Freshman year, I’ve been involved with them in one way or other. I’ve done lights for them, backstage, and even acted in one of their plays. The first show that got me interested was “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”. There was no turning back after that.  The one I enjoyed doing the most with them was “The Cabaret” musical show where I was on stage as an actor for the first time. I had multiple minor roles in that production such as a taxi driver, kit-kat dancer, German soldier, etc. It was absolutely thrilling to work with a group of amazing cast and crew members. I plan to work with them in one more production before I return back to India for the summer break.

One of the advantages of attending NYU Shanghai is the ability to spend up to three semesters at any of NYU’s 11 study away sites located all around the globe. I want to take this opportunity to circumnavigate the globe and experience different cultures and traditions. I am spending a semester in Berlin this fall, and in the United States next spring before I come back to Shanghai for my senior year. I want to accumulate as much experience as possible during my college so that when I go back to India after I graduate, I have something valuable to add to the cultural diversity in my country. While it might be too early to narrow down on a city to call my future home, my top pick would either be Shanghai or Mumbai in India.

 
 在上海纽约上学的一大优势就是能在纽约大学分布全球的11个海外教学点度过最多三个学期。我打算借此机会做环球旅行,体验不同的文化传统。这个秋季我会在柏林度过一个学期,明年春天去纽约,大四回到上海。我希望在大学时期积累尽可能多的经验,以便毕业后回到印度,能为文化多样性添加一些宝贵的东西。虽然现在要选择一个城市作为未来居所可能太早,但我的第一选择一定会是上海或者孟买。
 

All in all, I am glad to have chosen NYU Shanghai for the enriching experience I have had here so far. Everyday in Shanghai is an adventure and this city never ceases to amaze you. The people here add to a more memorable experience as everyone is humble and helpful. I am also excited about studying-away in junior year of college, and try fulfilling my childhood dream of circumnavigating the globe.

A Conversation with Chen Yuxin - Vice Dean of Business

Could you please go over your background and why you decided to come to NYU Shanghai?
 能请您说说您的经历,以及您来上海纽约大学的初衷吗?

Yes. Actually I grew up in Shanghai, so Shanghai is my hometown. My mom is a Shanghainese, and I also went to college in Shanghai, Fudan University, then I went to the US and studied marketing. After I got my PhDs my first job was at NYU stern, so I stayed at Stern for ten years. I got tenure there, and I left New York for the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Now I’ve returned to China, because I really like it here, and it’s my hometown. I came back in 2012 when I was on leave from Kellogg and visiting CEIBS – China Europe International Business School. So therefore I spent one year there, and by the end of my visit I learned that NYU was going to set up NYU Shanghai, and I thought it was a really wonderful opportunity. The Stern people contacted me, and basically for me it was like twofold homecoming – returning to NYU and returning to Shanghai.

Shanghai must have changed a lot since you left.
您走之后上海一定变化很大。

I grew up in the Puxi area, but now I’m living in Pudong. I think Shanghai has been preserved quite well. If you go to Puxi you can still see a lot of places with historical elements.


我在浦西长大,但现在我住在浦东。我认为上海的历史还是保留得很好的,如果你去浦西,还能看到很多有历史气息的地方。
 
I was looking at your background, and found that you originally majored in physics. How did you decide to make that transition?
您的本科专业是物理系的。为什么后来又转专业了呢?

 
For me it wasn’t really a very difficult transition. My undergraduate was in physics and then I went to graduate school majored in Computer Science. I didn’t finish my graduate school in China before I went to the US. During my graduate studies, I focused on computer science. The transition wasn’t so difficult because nowadays there are many business areas like finance, marketing, and operations, which are pretty much data-driven; they require a lot of quantitative skills. At the time, I wanted to do some applied work after I studied physics. I went into computer science, but I also wanted to do something more related to China’s development. I knew I would have a lot more opportunities if I studied business, so I went to the US in the mid-90s and applied for business school. To my surprise, it wasn’t difficult to get into a business school PHD program because they really liked my quantitative background. My background in physics and computer science really helped me. Even now I think my background in physics and computer science has helped me a lot in my research.


对我来说,这样转专业并不难。大学本科我学的是物理,研究生时候我学了计算机科学;去美国前我并没有完成研究生的课程。研究生阶段我一直致力于计算机科学。要转专业没那么难,因为商学的很多领域例如金融、营销、运营,都是数据驱动的,需要很多定量研究的技术。那时候我学了物理,就想做一些实用性的工作;我学了计算机,但还想做一些和中国的发展有关的事情。我知道如果我学商学会有更多机会,所以我在90年代中期去了美国,申请了商学院。商学院的博士项目出人意料地并不难进入,因为他们很看重我定量研究的背景。我在物理和计算机领域的学习背景真的给了我很大帮助。现在我依然觉得当初在物理和计算机方面的学习对我的研究帮助很大。

 

What area of research are you interested in?
您对什么领域比较感兴趣?


I’m doing quantitative marketing, or to put it other way I’m working with data-driven marketing applications. It involves using data to understand consumer behavior, using data to understand marketing decisions, and optimizing decisions with data, and also touching on subjects like e-commerce, internet marketing, and social network.
 

我在做计量经济学,换句话说,就是和数据驱动的营销应用打交道。它包括用数据理解消费者的行为,用数据理解营销决策,根据数据做出最优决策。它跟电子商务、网络营销和社交网络这些方面也有所关联。

Has your research shown differences in marketing strategies in China versus the US?
你在研究中有发现什么中美营销策略的不同吗?

Not much actually. If you look at the marketing, especially in the most advanced areas of practical marketing, the gap between China and the US is actually very small, or even non-existent. The famous Chinese companies like Alibaba, Tencent, and so on, which rely heavily on e-commerce and Internet or “internet plus” business, are actually very sophisticated. As I see it, new technology is easy to catch up to. You don’t need to go through the whole process of developing a new framework, you just add new technology to the existing framework.


实际上不多。如果你关注营销,尤其是实战营销中最前沿的方面,你会发现中美间的差距非常小,甚至不存在。中国的著名企业比如阿里巴巴、腾讯等很大程度上依赖于电子商务、网络和互联网业务,而且非常成熟。在我看来,最新的科技总是容易赶上,因为你不需要重新构建一个新框架,而只需要把新技术加入现有的框架中就可以了。
 
So what areas do you find China is perhaps lagging behind in?
那有什么方面中国是比较落后的吗?


I think the area where China is a bit behind in is something related to “soft power”, which basically revolves around how to build a brand image, how to enhance the consumer’s experience with a product. Soft areas such as these.


我认为中国在和“软实力”有关的方面稍显逊色,主要是如何建立品牌形象以及如何提升产品的顾客体验这些。
 
Is this an area you suggest your students look into for their careers?
您会建议你的学生日后从事研究“软实力”这个方面吗?


Yes, it’s a very important area to investigate. When a country develops middle income and high income demographics from a low income population, usually the consumers will look for utilitarian benefits from products; they don’t care about brand, it’s all about price and function. But eventually they gain more experience and want more utility from the emotional aspects of a product. The branding becomes more and more important when income grows and economy develops. Now we’re in a stage where branding and these soft aspects of marketing are becoming more and more important in China. I think our students may have a distinctive advantage working in this area, because this type of thing requires a lot of innovative thinking, and for people to be very open-minded, creative, and possessing global perspectives. Those are the traits which I think can be very useful in this area. A liberal arts education really helps here.


是的,这在研究上是一个非常重要的领域。当一个国家从低收入人群中发展到中等收入和高收入人群时,消费者会更关注产品的实用价值而非品牌,价格和功能成为主要考量。但最后,随着这群消费者的经验越加丰富,他们会更加追求产品的情感价值。所以收入增加、经济发展的时候品牌宣传也会变得越来越重要。而现在,我们正处在品牌宣传和其他营销软性方面在中国日趋重要的一个阶段。我认为我们的学生在这方面有着显著的优势,因为这些工作需要很强的创新思维,需要非常开明、有创造力和全球视野的人才。这样的人文素质至关重要,而通识教育对此帮助很大。
 
So what do you think of our students and what are the unique aspects of their generation? How do NYU Shanghai students compare to students in China or other students you’ve taught?
您认为我们的学生怎么样?这一代有什么特点?上海纽约的学生和中国及其他您教过的学生相比又怎么样?

Honestly speaking, before I came back to China and started at NYU Shanghai, I only taught MBA students and doctoral students. Since I have no reference to compare undergraduate students of the same generation between China and the US, I will speak on how the students of today compare to my generation. I feel like they’re more creative, and take more initiative than students during my college years. They’re especially good at seeking out interesting opportunities – startup competitions, and business plan competitions for example. They’re very active in seeking outside opportunities and finding out about interesting ideas. It’s a very positive trait.


其实在我回到中国,并在上海纽约大学工作之前,只教过MBA和博士生。因为我没有参考资料可以用来比较同一代的中美大学生,我就比较一下现在的学生和我这一代吧。比起我上学的时候,我感觉现在的学生们更有创意,也更加主动。他们特别善于发现一些特别的机会,例如创业大赛、商业企划大赛,也很积极地去寻找一些校外的机会,发掘一些有趣的想法。这都是很积极的一面。

What do you think much marketing teaches you about people in general?
总的来说,营销教给你了什么重要的知识?


The most important lesson I’ve learned from marketing is that you should always try to put yourself in other peoples’ shoes. You should not just form a perception of others based on a preconceptions. In marketing, we always think about and talk about listening to the consumers – what they will think of the product you’re selling or making, but this also applies to other situations in the real life. We should not form beliefs based solely on our own experiences. People are very different, so you should try to think from their perspective, their likes and dislikes. That’s the key of marketing, taking in the consumer’s perspective.


我从营销中学到的最重要的一课就是要永远站在别人的角度思考。你不能根据一点成见就对他人形成某种观念。在营销中,我们始终要考虑消费者,要倾听他们——他们会怎么看你销售的或者生产的产品,但这条原则在现实生活中的其他方面也一样适用。我们不能仅凭自己的经验就形成某种观点。人和人之间的区别很大,所以你应该努力地从他们的角度思考他们的好恶。这是营销的关键:从顾客的角度思考。
 
What are other foundational principles of marketing you teach to NYU Shanghai students?
除此之外,您还向上纽的学生们教授了什么基本的营销准则?

 
I’m teaching Introduction to Marketing, and I taught a similar course to MBA students in the past. The major difference is, MBA students tend to have rich working experience to draw upon. That’s why the course I taught them was basically oriented towards case studies, and every session would include a case discussion. Here, however, the challenge for the instructor with regards to the students I the lack of work experience. This makes discussion of case studies more difficult, and makes it difficult to draw upon examples. I also think teaching here is uniquely challenging because we have an equal number of Chinese and international students, which is very different from the US and China. I’ve taught in both American and Chinese international business schools. In the US, the international students are the minority, and international students in the US tend to actively make an effort to absorb American culture. They’ll watch sitcoms and read the news. When you teach in the US, you use examples based in the US that everyone knows about. The opposite applies in China, if you’re teaching mostly Chinese students, you talk about Chinese case studies like Wanglaoji. Here, I face a new challenge. Half the class has no idea about the culture in the US, but our textbook is written in the US, it talks about US companies, and give examples based on American case studies. A lot of Chinese students have no context for these case studies, because they have no work experience, have not worked in the US. Then if you give Chinese examples, the other half of the class has no idea what I’m talking about. This is the challenge, and it’s also why I tend to focus my case studies on very well-known brands like Apple, Coca-cola, and McDonald’s. I think this is a marketing specific challenge. It’s easier for other business professors, because marketing is really context-dependent. It’s about branding and consumer behavior, shopping habits, etc. Those things are very culture and context dependent.


我现在教的课是Introduction to Marketing,之前也给MBA 的学生上过类似的课。主要区别就是MBA 的学生有丰富的工作经验可供借鉴,所以我给他们上的课基本都是针对案例研究,每小节都会包括一个案例讨论。但在这里,作为教师最大的挑战就是学生们缺乏工作经验,这让案例研究时的讨论和举例都更加困难。我认为在这里授课特别有挑战性,还在于我们有相同数量的中国学生和国际学生,这跟在中国和美国都不同。我在中国和美国的国际商学院都教过课。在美国,国际学生是少数,他们会积极主动地去融入美国文化,比如看情景喜剧和新闻。当你在美国上课的时候就用大家都知道的美国案列。反过来在中国也一样,如果你教的大多数是中国学生就做中国的案例研究,比如王老吉。然而在这里,我面对的是一项新的挑战。班上一半的同学对美国文化毫不熟悉,但我们的课本是在美国编写的,讲的是美国的公司,根据美国的案例研究举例。很多中国学生不知道这些案例的背景,因为他们没有工作经验,也没在美国工作过。如果你举中国的例子呢,另一半学生又不知道我在说什么。这就是挑战所在了,也是我之所以把案例研究聚焦在非常著名的品牌比如苹果、可口可乐和麦当劳的原因。我想这应该是营销学独有的挑战,其他商学教授上课应该会容易一些,因为营销学实在太依赖于背景知识了。它和品牌推广、消费者行为、消费习惯等等有关,而这些都与文化背景紧密相连。
 
Why do you enjoy teaching marketing?
您享受教营销学吗?

I enjoy it because marketing itself is kind of fun. Also, teaching helps keep me up to date. If you teach marketing, you have to follow the latest developments in the fields. In business schools in the US and China, you have to keep reading, talking to people, talking to companies. It’s fun, and it’s social.

If your students want to pursue career in marketing, what kind of advice would you give them?

如果您的学生想从事营销工作,你会给他们什么建议?

Marketing nowadays is both a science and an art. If they want to pursue this field, they have to be aware of three things. The first, is that nowadays, and even more so in the future, marketing is becoming more and more quantitative, more data-driven. They need to learn about business statistics and big data. These things will become very useful. The second thing to remember is that despite its data-driven characteristics, marketing is and always will be an art. So they should have some knowledge in the humanities, and areas like anthropology, history, culture. These will come in very useful. If you really want to understand consumers and branding, that kind of training is essential. Finally, I think if you really want to be good at marketing, you have to be very humble, because at the end of the day, your opinion comes secondary to the consumer’s. So it’s very important. In marketing, the consumer is never right or wrong, when they make a choice, you follow them. 

现今的营销学既是科学,又是艺术。如果他们想致力于这个领域,必须牢记三件事情:第一,营销学正变得越来越量化,越来越由数据驱动,现在是这样,将来会更加如此。他们需要学习商业统计和大数据,这些会很有用;第二,即使有数据驱动这一特点,营销学始终还是一门艺术,所以需要了解人文学科,包括人类学、历史和文化等方面的知识。如果你真的想要理解顾客和品牌,这种训练是必要的。最后,如果你真的想要擅长营销,就必须懂得谦虚,因为最终顾客的想法才是第一位的,这点很重要。在营销中,顾客永远没有对错,当他们作出决定时,你就要听从他们。
