HACK Shanghai: China's Largest College Hackathon
"创客上海": 中国规模最大的大学创客马拉松
From November 15th to November 16th, NYU Shanghai hosted HackShanghai, China’s largest Hackathon. For 24 hours, over 250 students in four person teams gathered to realize innovative projects using technology and hands-on programming. Over 250 college students attended the NYU Shanghai student organized event. Attendees came from universities in China and around the world, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Stanford University, Harvard University, the University of Nigeria, and more. In addition to inviting delegates, mentors, judges, and finding volunteers, the 12 person organizing team made up of NYU Shanghai students sent emails, made phone calls, and went on in-person visits to secure sponsorship for the event. With the support of sponsors including ICBC Bank, Ford, Intel, Morgan Stanley, and Haier, they were able to offer over 100,000 RMB in prizes.
2014年11月15日至16日，上海纽约大学举办了中国规模最大的创客马拉松——“创客上海”大赛。在这24小时里，250多名学生分为4人小组，用科技和手动编程实现各种创意项目。这250多名学生来自北京大学、清华大学、复旦大学、斯坦福大学、哈佛大学、尼日利亚大学等国内外各大高校。来自上海纽约大学的12位学生自发组成团队，不仅邀请代表、导师、评委，招募志愿者，还通过邮件、电话及亲自拜访确保了活动的赞助。通过中国工商银行、福特汽车、因特尔、摩根士丹利和海尔这些机构的赞助，他们成功置办了价值10万元人民币的奖品。
Most major universities in the US have been hosting large college hackathons for the last few years, yet the movement has yet to take hold in China. One of the aims of HackShanghai was to kick start the hackathon movement in China in order to give young people an opportunity to explore creatively, and put concepts into practice. By bringing together hundreds of programmers and innovators from colleges around the world, the event validated and reinforced each individual’s drive to create while forming an effective community of “hackers”. Projects created during HackShanghai included a wearable device for warning against fatigue through detected brain waves, a program for turning 2D stencils into 3D printed objects, lightweight hand warming gloves, a music sharing app, and more.
近年来，大部分美国主流大学都举办过大型创客马拉松活动，但还是第一次来到中国。“创客上海”的举办拉开了创客马拉松在中国的序幕，让更多的年轻人有机会探索创新，并将创意付诸实践。这个活动汇集了数百位来自全球高校的编程者和创新者，实现并强化了个人的创造力，同时创建起一个“创客”社团。在此次“创客上海”比赛中被开发出来的项目包括一个通过识别脑电波探测疲劳的可穿戴式提醒装置、一套将2D模板印刷转换为3D打印的程序、轻便型自供暖手套、音乐分享应用程序等。
HackShanghai is yet another instance where our amazing students have worked hard to put NYU Shanghai on the map. Almost every member of the organizing team this year will be away from Shanghai next year on their study away semesters, but the freshmen are more than ready to take up the mantle, and we look forward to seeing an even bigger and more successful event in Fall of 2015!

我们的学生 - Roxanne Roman
My name is Roxanne. I’m a first generation American. My parents are immigrants from the Philippines. My family moved around a lot because of my dad’s military career, so I’ve lived all over the world. Currently, my family lives in Japan, and that is where I call “home”. Growing up and moving around frequently was hard at times, but I’ve grown to love it. I’ve lived in Georgia (state), Germany, New Jersey, California, Japan, and now, China. Although I don’t have a lot of childhood friends, I know people from all over the world. This has enriched my life, and since coming to this school, I’ve met people from places I lived before and travelled to as well. Growing up in this way has made it so I can talk to Europeans, people from either coast of the US, and people from all over Asia.

One of the key values of NYU and NYU Shanghai is this global perspective. We’re all meant to be global citizens, and I suppose growing up as I did gave me a unique perspective on the idea of a “global citizen”. More than any level of exposure to different countries and cultures, global citizenry to me is about how much you feel connected to the world around you. When I heard about NYU Shanghai, I saw it as a school that would give me that kind of opportunity.
纽约大学和上海纽约大学的主要价值观之一就是全球视野。我们向往成为全球公民，而我四海为家的成长经历赋予了我对“全球公民”这个概念的独特见解。于我而言，全球公民不仅仅意味着去接触不同地区和民族的风土人情，也应意味着培养自己对与世界密切连接的认识。当我了解到上海纽约大学的情况时，我就觉得这所大学能给我那样的机会。
I was talking with my friend and roommates in my room about why you would choose NYU Shanghai if you’d been accepted to one of the better US schools like U.C. Berkeley or even one of the Ivy League schools. I said that I chose to come here because I wanted to do something for myself and with my life that will be different and extraordinary; no matter what the outcome of college is – whether I end up “successful” or not – I will come out of this experience with a new language, with three years in Shanghai under my belt, with all my study abroad semesters, and with new friends from all over the world. I will have lived. I will have grown as a person. That’s not something you can say if you go to school anywhere else, no matter how many accolades the school may possess.
我曾经与我的朋友和室友谈到，如果你已经被像加州伯克利，甚至常春藤联盟成员学校这类的美国顶尖院校录取了，你为什么还会选择上海纽约大学。我觉得，选择这里是因为我想要给自己寻找一段不同的并且非凡的经历。无论我毕业后能不能成为所谓的成功人士，至少我将收获一门语言，收获三年在上海的历练，收获海外的交流学习，并交到世界各地的新朋友。我会精彩地生活并成长。这不是在其他任何地方的大学里能够得到的，无论这些大学拥有多少荣誉。
Coming here was kind of a whirlwind venture for me and my parents – they had no idea I was even thinking of applying. I applied to NYU Shanghai, had my interview, got my acceptance, came to Shanghai to see the city, and then I accepted my offer. So one day at dinner I told my parents, “I’m going to China in a week to see Shanghai, and I think NYU Shanghai is probably going to be my school.” I told them my vision of who I saw myself becoming, that I didn’t see myself following a straight and narrow path. I kind of hit them over the head with my decision to come here, and I don’t think they slept the night after I told them. But they’re definitely proud of me though, especially seeing how much I’ve grown and all I’ve accomplished in my time here. After I showed them how much I care about this school, they’ve actually fallen in love with NYU Shanghai too.
来到这里对我和我的家人来说都有点突如其来，他们甚至根本没想到我在考虑申请这所大学。我自己申请了上海纽约大学，自己来参加面试，收到录取通知书，自行来到这座城市参观并决定接受通知书。直到有天晚餐时我告诉我的父母“下周我要去中国，看看上海，我觉得上海纽约大学很有可能是我未来的大学”。我告诉他们我不适合遵从常规的人生路线，也分享了我心目中未来的自己。我的决定有点吓到他们了，我想那晚他们一定都没有睡好觉。但他们仍然为我感到自豪，尤其是看到我在上海纽约大学的成长和成绩之后他们感到非常自豪。我告诉他们我多么在意这所大学，这令他们也爱上了上海纽约大学。
I think they always expected me to go to UCLA or Berkeley, but they love that I keep throwing them for loops. They’re never going to be able to say “we’ve seen it all” with me around. In a way, making my own decision about where I would go to school was the start of me trying to take charge of my own future.
我想他们以前可能一直觉得我会上加州大学洛杉矶分校或伯克利学院，但他们也喜欢我总是给他们带来的惊喜，有我在，我的父母绝对不会感到无聊。自己选择学校在某种程度上开启了我掌管自己未来的序幕。
No matter how much I tell my parents about my experiences during first semester here, they still can’t really get a grasp on the entire scope of how much I had to change and adapt. From little things like learning how to do laundry in Shanghai, to bigger things like realizing that I don’t have to rely on my parents to make my decisions anymore. Though I still go to them for advice, and I know they’re always going to support me, I know that I’m the authority now. Living and studying at NYU Shanghai has given me a head start towards that realization, to understanding my own strength as a person.
无论我跟父母描述了多少我第一个学期在上海经历的事情，他们都无法完全认识到我经历过的改变和适应。有些小事（例如学会自己洗衣服）似乎微不足道，但有些将会改变我一生。在这里，我意识到做决定前不再需要事事禀报父母。我还是会询问他们的意见，他们还是会永远支持我，但我知道现在是我自己主宰自己。上海纽约大学的生活和学习让我意识到这点，也让我认识到自己内在的潜力。
Taking my first classes, learning a new language, living in a new city, living with a roommate – all of these experience have really helped me blossom. This second year has been a vast improvement over the first because I feel so much more mature, like I can navigate and excel in my life here. All my classmates have improved as well. We feel like we’ve accomplished something worthwhile in a short amount of time.
上第一堂课、学习一门新的语言、生活在一个新的城市、与一位室友共同生活——所有这一切都让我迅速成长起来。而第二年的提高比第一年更加显著，我成熟了很多，我能认清并规划在这里的生活。我的同学们也成长了，我们都感觉到在短时间内得到了一些有价值的东西。
All of the international students are trying really hard to learn Chinese. The Chinese program here is amazing, but as a language, Chinese is just so difficult. But some level of Chinese fluency was one of my ultimate goals in coming here, and I’ve had so much fun building my vocabulary and practicing with my classmates. The best part is seeing our conversations transform slowly from 100% English conversations into a mixture of 90%, then 75%, then 50% English/Chinese conversations. We’ve actually built up a unique community language here – a phenomenon resulting from so many of us studying the language together. We have words, phrases, and slang specific to our school that are formed of unique combinations of Chinese and English. For example, we take the Chinese grammatical structure: “tai…le”(“it’s too….”) and insert all kinds of adjectives into the middle of it. You hear students around campus saying things like, “tai embarrassing le”.
所有国际学生都很努力地在学习汉语，学校的汉语课程非常棒，不过汉语实在很难。但是我来这里最重要的目标之一就是达到一定的流利度。为了达到这个目标，我和同学们有很多有趣的学习和练习方式。最有意思的是我们的交流从百分之百的英语转变成90%、75%，然后变成一半汉语一半英语。我们这些学习语言的人共同创立了一种独特的语言模式，在学校里使用独创的中英交杂表达法，比如，我们取中文的语法结构“太……了”，然后在中间加入各种形容词，所以你在我们校园里的各个角落都可能听到学生们说出“太embarrassing了”这样的句子。
A year ago I was wonderfully lost in the overwhelming world of NYU Shanghai. Although the school was small, I hadn’t grown up enough in my first year to be able to navigate all the new experiences that flooded my sensory system. I’ve come back in my second year much more anchored to my goals. I feel that I know where I’m going now and it’s such a comforting feeling, it has allowed me to take on a lot more responsibilities with confidence.
一年前，我着迷了上海纽约大学的新世界。尽管学校很小，但第一年我还没有足够的能力来应对所有这些扑面而来的新事物。而到了第二年，我觉得能够明确自己的目标了，我开始清楚前面的路该怎么走，这种感觉给我增添了许多安全感，也让我有信心承担更多责任。
As student body President, I’ve expanded a lot of my student life and residence goals into leading the student government this year. We’re aiming to establish traditions, because we want our school to have a personality that reflects our culture and location.
作为广大学生的主席，我在领导学生会的过程中，也拓展了去年我作为学生事务代表的目标。学生会正在努力建立起一些上海纽约大学专属的传统，因为我们希望这所大学能够反映出自己的文化和定位。
We want to make sure student government is well established, that it becomes an effective presence advocating for students for many years to come. We want to be involved in student life so students know their representation has a voice. Student government at NYU Shanghai is very important. We support and create clubs, host school wide events to bring us all together, give students a voice in their residential life, build relationships with local universities, and stand as a bridge between students and administration.
我们也在努力帮学生会打好基础，使之在未来几年里都能够高效地服务学生。我们希望融入学生们的生活，让他们知道他们的代表拥有发言权。在上海纽约大学，学生会非常重要，我们支持和创建社团、举办全体性的校际活动、让学生们畅抒己见、与当地其他高校建立密切联系，并搭建学生和管理层之间的桥梁。
As president I’d also like to make student government more accessible to students. I want every student at NYU Shanghai to know that they have a team behind them. Each member of student government cares so much about this school and our classmates that we really want to see everyone’s dreams come true as best we can.
作为学生会主席，我还希望让学生们感到学生会是亲近他们的组织，让每一位学生都知道身后有一个团队在支持着他们。学生会的每一位成员都十分关心学校和同学，我们的愿望就是让每个人的梦想都成真，我们会为之努力。
We’re also working really hard this year to establish NYU Shanghai amongst local universities, to make the NYU Shanghai name known to the rest of China and the world.
2014这一年我们还在竭尽全力地在当地大学中宣传上海纽约大学，让我们的学校为全中国乃至全世界所知。
We’re also working on integrating our student body as much as possible between class years and cultures. We want to foster lifelong friendships here. When we’re older and out in the world, it’s the relationships we build here that will help us get even farther in life. Everyone here is invested in each other’s success because we believe in the greatness of each other’s futures. It has been a bit of a rocky experience getting everyone to mix. The 2017 class only had each other for a year before the 2018 class came in. I feel that people on both sides experienced some timidity. It was the same between the international and Chinese students last year. I think we’re all just showing very human traits of shyness when it comes to making friends. We’re working to get everybody laughing together as one school in student government.
我们也在关注不同年级、不同文化学生之间的互动，培养终生友谊。当我们毕业进入社会之后，在这里建立的友谊能帮助我们在人生的道路上走得更远，这里每个人都愿意为了其他同学的成功而付出，因为我们深信彼此的未来将是灿烂的。目前，我们大家都在努力互相融合。在2018届学生进来之前的一年里，2017届是这个学校唯一的学生。现在还是能察觉到两届学生之间存有一些羞怯，去年中国学生与国际学生之间也是如此。我想，与不同背景的人接触，起初总是会有点害羞吧。所以我们学生会正在努力让大家抛弃隔阂，共同欢笑。
Along those lines, we’re hoping to create a system of inheritance here at NYU Shanghai to make sure we have smooth turnovers next year when the sophomores study away and freshman take on more leadership positions. We’ve noticed some holes in the system that we’re trying to mend with mentorships.
循着这些目标，我们希望形成一个完整的传承体制。当大二学生赴别地交流学习时，我希望今年的新生们会很顺利地接过我们的任务和岗位。我们已经注意到学生会体系中的一些漏洞并与导师一起改进。
Though student government is like a job in and of itself, I still try to participate in other activities around school. This summer, I participated in the first NYU Shanghai Reality Show. I worked with an incredible group of energetic, creative people at Tisch School of Arts. What we came up with not only did service to a fantastic NYU tradition, our show brought down the house! I’ve done anything I loved more than creating the Reality Show with my cast mates.
虽然我投入学生会里的时间相当于一份全职工作，我还是尽量参加学校的其他活动。今年夏天，我参加了第一届上海纽约大学的Reality Show，与一群充满活力和创新的人们一起在纽约大学Tisch艺术学院工作。我们不但呈现出了纽约大学的一个非常独特的传统，更博得了满堂彩！这次Reality Show是我到目前为止一生中经历的最快乐的事情。
I’m also a Resident Assistant, which has been amazing because I feel like a big sister to my floor in the dorms (the 11th). I love that I have an impact and can help so many people in different ways here at NYU Shanghai.
我还担任宿管助理，这让我觉得自己是11层宿舍的“大姐姐”。我喜欢用各种不同的方式来影响和帮助上海纽约大学的同仁们。
Although I’m enjoying myself immensely here, I also want to take advantage of my time as a student of the NYU Global Network University to get out there and see the world. I have plans to study over the summer in Washington DC and New York. I’m also excited to go abroad to take classes in political studies in Buenos Aires and Abu Dhabi. I’ve also fallen in love with learning languages, so I hope I’ll be able to pick up some Spanish in Argentina, and perhaps some Arabic in Abu Dhabi. Combined with my growing Chinese ability, I might be something of a triple threat in the future!
尽管我无比享受在这里的生活，我还是希望能充分利用在纽约大学的全球教育体系中学习的时间，暂时走出这里，看看世界。我计划夏天在华盛顿和纽约学习，也很期待到布宜诺斯艾利斯和阿布扎比上政治学的课程。我还爱上了语言学习，所以希望在阿根廷和阿布扎比的时候可以学一些西班牙语和阿拉伯语。加上我不断提高的汉语水平，未来我可能会成为“三维威胁”呢！

A Conversation with Wang Jianye - Visiting Professor of Economics and Director of the NYU Shanghai Volatility Institute对话经济学教授兼波动研究中心主任，王建业
Please give a background on yourself.
请您简单地介绍一下您自己。
Towards the end of the 1970s, I enrolled in the Economics Department of Peking University. Soon after obtaining my Bachelor’s degree there, I went as a Fulbright scholar to study at Columbia University, where I received my PhD in economics in May 1989.
上世纪70年代末，我被北京大学经济系录取。在北大取得学士学位后不久，我便作为富布赖特学者前往哥伦比亚大学深造，并于1989年5月获得经济学博士学位。
I joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) upon graduation, initially working on African countries and transition economies in the former USSR and Eastern Europe. I was the IMF’s first Resident Representative in the Republic of Georgia (1994-1996) and witnessed firsthand the collapse of the Soviet economy. We worked together with the authorities to stop hyperinflation, introduce the national currency, and eventually stabilize the economy. I spent part of my IMF career on debt negotiations and rescheduling for developing countries, including debt relief for highly indebted poor countries (HIPCs), many of these were in sub-Saharan Africa. I also led IMF missions on macroeconomic policy consultations and structural adjustment lending to member countries.

I returned to China in 2008 after being away from the country for nearly 25 years, and joined China Exim bank as its Chief Economist and Economic Counselor. At China Exim Bank, I was entrusted to lead the Bank’s crisis response task force while facing an unfolding financial crisis in the U.S. and a turbulent world economy. During this period, I was interested in issues related to currency, debt, and structural reform, which are not only relevant to China, but also important for our work around the globe.

Can you tell me about your work with the Volatility Institute in Shanghai?

The Volatility institute at NYU Shanghai (VINS) was formally launched on November 27th, 2014. Our mission is to create opportunities for research and collaboration on the study of risk in the Chinese financial market and markets around the world.

As the Chinese economy develops, we see rising demand for monitoring and analyzing financial risk. This in part reflects the ongoing change in China’s financial structure, from a system dominated by a few large state-owned banks to a system where securities markets, or more broadly non-bank financial intermediation, and small private institutions play a larger role. Rising demand for empirical research on financial risk also reflects the gradual opening of China’s capital account and financial market.
随着中国经济的发展，对监控和分析金融风险的需求日益显著。这在某种程度上反映了中国金融市场结构正在经历的转变，即从由少数大型国有银行主导的体制结构，转变为由证券市场，或更广义地说——非银行金融中介机构以及小型私立机构占更多比重的机制。对于金融风险实证性研究需求的增长也反映了中国资本账户和金融市场正在逐步开放。
China has been a high-saving country, with large foreign assets. Over time, private holding of foreign assets will become significant, outward investment will exceed inward investment, and China will become a net capital exporter. Domestic corporate entities and households are increasingly interested in investment opportunities and risks abroad. In addition, the RMB will also see wider use in international transactions. The VINS will facilitate academic research, and support studies to understand changing financial markets.
中国已经成为了拥有大量外国资产的高储蓄率国家。不久的将来，会出现大量私人持有外资的现象，对外投资会高于对内投资，中国将变成净资本输出国。国内的公司和私人投资者越来越瞄准海外的投资机会和风险。此外，人民币在国际市场交易中的用处也将日益广泛。VINS旨在助力学术探索，支持分析研究，以认识不断变化的金融市场。
Economics has taken you all over the world and brought you all kinds of experiences. What initially interested you in economics?
“经济”带您走遍世界，给了您多样的经历和视野。是什么让您最初对经济学感兴趣的？
I was a worker in my hometown of Guangzhou before going to college in Beijing. Our factory produced telephone parts, not for Samsung or Apple, but hand-cranked phones, as you may find in an old movie. I held some leadership responsibilities, managing a workshop of more than a hundred workers at a time, but the technology was backwards, productivity was so low, and the factory generated little value. I did not see hope there. I sensed there was much more I needed to learn, that we had to learn from more advanced economies in areas that went beyond technology.
去北京上大学之前，我在家乡广州当工人。我们工厂生产电话零件，并非三星或苹果那样的手机，而是在老电影中才能见到的手摇式电话。当时我负责领导一个有一百多位工人的车间，但是技术落后、生产效率低、工厂效益不好，在那里我看不到希望。我意识到有许多东西需要向经济发达地区学习，不仅仅在科技领域。
Thanks to the Reform and Opening up after the Cultural Revolution, the government launched the process of selecting college students based on nation-wide exams. I passed the exam and was selected to go to Peking University, one of the best in China. My factory experience helped me to make up my mind on what I want to do in my life and how best to use my time at Peking University. I initially I thought about studying math or engineering, but I felt that economic management was one of the key areas that was holding this country back. I didn’t know much about economics, but I’d encountered economic puzzles back when I was employed in the workshop.
很庆幸，政府在文化大革命后推行了改革开放政策，通过全国性高考来选拔大学生。我通过了考试，并被中国顶尖学府——北京大学入取。工厂的经历让我明确了自己要做什么以及如何充分利用在北大的求学时光。最初我想研读数学或工程，但我意识到经济管理上的落后才是阻碍国家进步的重要因素之一。我对经济知之甚少，但之前在车间工作的时候，确实遇到过经济问题。
The word “economics” in Chinese is jingji which is short for jingshi jiming, jingshi means “to make the economy work”, jiming means “to benefit the people”. I thought this was a great cause. So I felt it was something I wanted to learn. That’s why I chose to study economics.
“经济”二字取自“经世济民”。“经世”是指治理国事，“济民”是指造福人民。我认为这是一项崇高的事业，也正是我想要学习的东西。因此我选择攻读经济。
Have you enjoyed teaching at NYU Shanghai?
您喜欢在上海纽约大学教书授课吗？
I learned a lot from this experience. The students certainly belong to another generation. They are aware of what’s going on abroad because of the Internet, and sitting in the classroom with classmates from all over the world. From a cultural perspective, the Chinese students are quite different from my generation because they have much smaller gap with their foreign counterparts.
这一年来我自己也学到了很多。现在的学生不愧为新世纪的年轻一代，通过互联网以及与来自全世界各国的同学们同坐在一个教室里互相交流，他们能知天下事。从文化角度来看，现在的中国学生已经与我这一代人不一样了，因为他们有更多的机会能够与外国同学沟通交流。
Our students are energetic, smart, and many of them motivated and hard working. Since all of them were born after 1990, I strongly feel they need to know what has happened in this economy as well as the world economy in the past, particularly over the last three or four decades. This should help them to better understand where we are today, perhaps to think about the future and what they are going to do with their educations.
我们的学生有活力、聪明、上进、又刻苦努力。他们都是90后，我强烈地觉得他们需要了解中国乃至世界经济领域的过去，特别是近三四十年以来发生了什么。这能帮助他们更好地理解我们现在的位置，也许还会促使他们思考未来以及学成之后要做什么。
A college education should ideally cultivate a well-rounded person who is constructive, innovative, creative, who possesses critical thinking skills, and can be confident in a globalized world. A college education should result in someone who is more than a worker possessing some in-demand skills and is ready to enter the job market to earn a salary. I see education as a process of instilling values which will perhaps be more lasting and useful for the rest of their lives.
高等教育应当培养有建设性、有创造力、敢于创新、有思辨力以及置之海内外皆能游刃有余的全面型人才。他们应当不仅仅像技术工人一样，拥有社会所需的一技之长，就不假思索地工作挣钱。我眼中的高等教育应当灌输学生受用一生的价值观念。
I know that a lot of students who come don’t want their jobs to define them, or just be a skilled worker in a corporation. So what would you say to them, what kind of advice would you give them drawing upon your own experiences? What are the elements or what is the element about yourself that has allowed you to have these experiences?
据我所知，很多学生不希望被自己的职业所局限，或者只是成为企业里的技术工人。那么您会对他们说些什么？根据您自己的经历，能给他们一些建议吗？是哪些或者哪个关键因素让您有机会得到这么多不同的经历？
Compared to many in my generation, I’m probably among the luckiest. To be able to move from Guangzhou to Beijing, from Beijing to New York City, and then from Washington DC to all over the world in my IMF years, travelling to countries rich and poor. To our students, I would say, keep an open mind, try to enjoy your college years as much as possible, read broadly, do not just focus narrowly on the textbooks. The way this world developing, I hope our students realize that the shelf life of individual pieces of knowledge is getting shorter. What’s important is to develop the ability to learn and adapt, the ability to think critically and creatively.
在我这一代人里，我算是非常幸运的。从广州到北京，北京到纽约，再从华盛顿到世界各地......在国际货币基金组织工作的那些年，我遍访各个国家，或贫穷或富裕。我想对我们的学生说：保持开放的心态，享受大学生活；要广泛阅读，不要狭隘地局限于课本知识。世界在发展，我希望学生们能意识到：个人知识的期限无法长久，最重要的是培养学习和适应能力，以及批判思维和创造力。
What do you think of the progress of NYU Shanghai?
您怎样看待上海纽约大学的发展？
I think the school has made very good progress in a short period of time. In November 2014, the students held the Hackathon. Some of the students participating in the Hackathon have only been here for three semesters, but there have been some amazing contributions. As these students become juniors and seniors and become even more enterprising, we’re going to see more amazing achievements. So you tell me, how is NYU Shanghai doing?
我认为上海纽约大学在短时间内取得了相当好的进展。去年11月份，学生们举办了“编程（创客）马拉松”。一些参赛学生仅仅在这里学习了三个学期，就表现出了相当强的能力。等这些学生升到大三和大四，变得更加进取，必将取得更多令人瞩目的成绩。上海纽约大学发展也就不言而喻了。
We’ve had a marked influence on higher education in China. It’s about cultivating a generation of students that are innovation driven. Not only should they be able to talk, they should be able to do. Not only should they know how to pass exams, they should have a strong sense of responsibility with a moral backbone.
我们对中国的高等教育产生了一定影响。这是一代有创新精神的学生，我们要培养他们不仅能说，更要能做。他们不但应该知道怎样通过考试，更应该有道德责任感。
