As NYU Shanghai’s second ever semester swung into full gear, our students and faculty truly began to shine. In this issue, we update you on the recent goings-on in our exciting corner of the world, get up close and personal with one of NYU Shanghai’s most brilliant professors and brand new Provost – Joanna Waley-Cohen, and have a heart to heart with Jack Zhu, first prize winner in the 21st Century Coca-Cola English Speech Competition.

Candidate Weekend
校园日活动

NYU Shanghai’s second candidate weekend was a rousing success. Students, faculty, and staff rallied, as over 500 students from across China flocked to NYU Shanghai to engage in sample classes and participate in interviews with successful professionals. This year, we saw students from 29 out of 31 provinces in China, and NYU president John Sexton was here to personally meet with the candidates.

First Lady Michelle Obama Cites NYU Shanghai Student in Speech
美国总统夫人Michelle Obama在演讲中提及上海纽约大学学生

During the First Lady’s official visit to China, she emphasized the transformative power of education during a speech in Beijing, and specifically cited the excellence of NYU Shanghai’s efforts. In her talk, she mentioned NYU Shanghai student Royale Nicholson – a first generation college student with hard-working parents who instilled in her a strong belief in the value of education. 美国总统夫人Michelle Obama出访中国期间，在北京的演讲强调了教育是改变世界的力量。在演讲中，她特别提到了上海纽约大学，以及我们的美籍学生Royale Nicholson。Royale是家里第一个上大学的人，父母长期辛苦工作，并使她建立起了对于教育价值的坚定信念。

NYU Shanghai Networking Night

On March 21st, our students gathered to test the waters of the professional world by meeting with representatives of several dozen local and multi-national companies. In attendance were a number of corporations from a wide range of industries covering the arts, education, finance, tourism, publishing, technology, and more. The event emphasized learning, challenging our students’ networking skills, and giving practical application to tips learned from NYU Shanghai’s career fashion show earlier in the month.

China Seeks Foreign Experts
中国需要外国专家      

State Administration of Foreign Experts (SAFEA) Administrator Zhang Jiangguo discusses the importance that foreign experts play in bridging China and the rest of the world, citing NYU Shanghai’s Jeff Lehman as an example of the high-caliber talent attracted by the Recruitment Program of Foreign Experts spearheaded by SAFEA.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself and your background?
请简单介绍一下您自己。

I’ve been teaching the history of China at NYU since 1992. From 2009 to 2012 I chaired the History Department, and I was also very involved in the original establishment of NYU Abu Dhabi – I designed the history curriculum, and I was involved in hiring the first three historians there. I’ve also twice taught Abu Dhabi’s January term in Shanghai, and have had a lot to do with Global Network University students. So, because of that and my professional interest in China, I was asked to be the founding Dean of Arts and Sciences here.

我从1992年开始在纽约大学教授中国历史。从2009年到2012年，我担任了纽约大学历史系的主任。我也参与了阿布扎比纽约大学的建设，主持设计了历史课程，并帮助聘请了学校最早的三位历史学家。我还在上海为授过阿布扎比一月寒假课程授课，与纽约大学全球教育体系里的学生们也有密切的联系。基于以上的这些原因，以及从自身专业出发对中国的兴趣，我被邀请来担任上海纽约大学文理学院的创始院长。

Why have you decided to study China, and what is your interest in China?
您为什么选择研究中国，您对中国的兴趣点是什么？

I decided when I was 18 that I would do something at university that I would never have the opportunity to do again. So I decided to learn Chinese. It was definitely a life changing experience. Then I had the opportunity 40 years ago to come to China for the first time. I spent a month here in 1973, and that was even more of a life-changing experience than learning Chinese. We took the train to China across Siberia. It took nine days to get here from London and we arrived during the waning years of the Cultural Revolution. It was definitely different from anything any of us had ever encountered. It certainly solidified my interest in China, although as a historian my interest in China is more in the longer ago past.

在我18岁毕业的时候，在大学这四年里，我就下定决心，要做那些我一辈子再也没有机会做的事情，所以我选择了学中文。这真的改变了我的一生。四十年前，我第一次来到中国，那是1973年，我在这里待了一个月。那次经历深刻地改变了我的世界观。我们坐了9天火车，从伦敦穿越西伯利亚来到中国。那是文化大革命的最后几年。遭遇到的都是从来没有经历或听说过的事情。这段经历，无疑奠定了我对中国的兴趣，尽管作为历史学家，我的研究专业是很多年前的中国。

What part of China’s longer ago past are you most interested in?
您对中国历史的哪一段最感兴趣？

Mostly the 17th and 18th century. The Qing Dynasty at its height. I find it interesting that it was really one of the great empires of the world in the 18th century. The world was getting increasingly connected, and one of my strongest interests is the connection between China and the outside world. Although simplifying it down to a duality of inner and outer is a bad way to talk about it.

17到18世纪的清朝，是18世纪世界上最伟大的王朝之一。那时候世界各国之间的联系开始多了，而我对于那时候的中国与外界的关系，很感兴趣。而用两极化的“里”和“外”的概念来讨论这些关系，就有点过于简单化了。

I’m interested in trade, as well as artistic, scientific, and religious exchange. Things that happen at the low levels as well as the highest levels, and how they impact peoples’ lives in ways they don’t always notice. My graduate dissertation was on Chinese law in the 18th century, because I had been a lawyer before that. That is something I’m coming back to. My other academic interest is in Chinese food culture.

我还对贸易以及中国与外国的艺术、科学和宗教的交流感兴趣。我喜欢研究各种层面上发生的事情，并着意研究这些事情怎样不经意地影响着当时人们的生活。我的研究生毕业论文题目是“十八世纪的中国法律”，因为我之前当过律师。最近，我的学术兴趣也在慢慢返回这个话题。另外我也非常喜欢中国的饮食文化。

Do you do a lot of comparing of China as it was historically and China as it is now?
在您的研究里会不会常常比较中国的现在与过去？

Not very much. It’s easy to say, “Oh, this is just the same as two hundred years ago”, but the context is always so different. You can sometimes see echoes or a foreshadowing of something, but I think it’s a dangerous thing to compare the past and present too much, because it suggests that nothing changes. Things do change.

不太多。要说“这个现象跟200年前是一样的”这样的话，简直太容易。然而，语境是截然不同的。有时你可以看到一些回应或线索，但我觉得太多的对比现下与过去是一件危险的事情，因为事物总是变化的。

Do you have a lot of stories you tell your students when you are in class about your experiences in China?
在课堂上会不会给学生们讲很多关于您在中国经历的故事？

I do tell them stories, and some of them are about myself. I say to them things like, “When I first came here, Pudong didn’t exist, it was just a marshland.” I tell them about my first journey here. At the time, everybody was wearing Mao suits, and we were told not to bring skirts. They said, “All women in China wear pants”, so we just brought pants, but in the countryside all the women were wearing skirts! They said to us, “We find it very hot to wear pants, why don’t you wear skirts?” I tell them funny little anecdotes like that.

我会给学生们讲故事。有时候告诉他们“我刚来这里的时候，浦东还不存在，只是一片沼泽。” 我也告诉他们四十年前第一次来中国的经验。那时候所有人都穿着灰色的中山装，所以来之前我们被嘱咐不要带裙子。我被告知说，“中国所有的女人都穿裤子的”，我们就只带了裤子。到了乡下发现所有女人竟然都穿着裙子！她们就问我们，“穿裤子不热吗？干嘛不穿裙子呀？” 我会跟学生们讲一些这样有趣的琐事。

What is your personal mission? What are the important things to you as an individual?
您的个人使命是什么？什么东西对你来说是最重要的？

I would say my personal mission is to be honest and kind above all else, and to try to figure out what the right thing is to do in any given situation. Perhaps because I’ve been studying China for so long, I believe in reciprocity to the greatest extent possible. I think that’s one of the most profound parts of Confucian ideas, that you shouldn’t do to others what you wouldn’t want to have done to yourself. Another thing that is part of my way of looking at the world is the realization that things are connected in unexpected ways, and you have to try and find those connections.

可以说我的个人使命就是做一个真实厚道的人，这最重要。我也想在每个情况下尽量做出适当的选择。有可能因为我研究中国研究了很久，我真的觉得应该时时刻刻尽量做到互惠这一美德。我觉得这是我从孔子学里面所体会到的最深刻的一点：己所不欲，勿施于人。另外我还觉得很多事情和现象之间都存在着你意想不到的联系，我们应当努力地探索这些联系。

What do you think of the students we have?
您怎么看我们的这些学生？

They are amazing. Sometimes I think they were very brave to come to a university that didn’t exist. I think they’ve had an extraordinary opportunity to create something out of nothing, as we have. Sometimes I’m reminded that they’re just 18 years old, though, and there’s a lot they don’t yet know. But they’ve been hard working, thoughtful, and sincere in really impressive ways.

他们很棒。有时想想，他们当时能够下定决心来上一个根本还没有建立的学校是间非常了不起和勇敢的事情。他们有机会在零基础上帮助建立一所学院，这是非比寻常的一件事。有时会突然想起他们其实只有18岁，有很多事情他们还不了解。但是他们很用功、用心、真诚，这给我留下了深刻的印象。

I’m incredibly impressed by and proud of their developments, which I’ve been able to observe over the last year. In terms of their language ability, confidence, their maturity, it just takes my breath away. The Western and Chinese students are also melding together a lot. We’re very conscious of that in theory, but they’re making it happen in practice. It’s really wonderful to see.

这一年里看着学生们的成长，真的令我为他们骄傲。他们的成长出乎了我的预料，他们的语言能力、自信和成熟，简直让我惊叹。西方的学生和中国学生慢慢开始融合并在一起。我们在理论上设计学校，而他们——我们的学生在实践并实现着我们的设计，让我们的梦想渐渐成为现实，这的确令人兴奋。

How do you feel about NYU Shanghai’s progress to date, where do you see areas for improvement, and where do you see it going?

您对上海纽约大学至今的进展哪些方面比较满意，哪些方面觉得需要提高？将来学校会怎么发展？

It’s extraordinary that we’re already at the end of our first year. Things have gone quite well on the whole. Of course, we’ve made mistakes, and every day we see ways in which we could do better or rectify something. Some of the things you want to change are very small and some of them are very large, but the large and the small are so interconnected that you can’t move one thing without moving everything else.

有点不敢相信，第一年这么快就过去了。我觉得总体上走得稳健。当然，我们也会犯错，我几乎每天都会发现可以改善或者修改的地方，但是有时牵一发会动全身，改变一件事情就会影响到别的所有地方。

Many things have got better this year. Our communication is much improved, for example. We have a better idea of what’s going on, and our planning is clearer. We have a lot more meetings with students. In our Tea Talks, I get together with students and find out whatever they’re concerned about. They talk with me about academic matters, they talk with Tyra Liebmann (Dean of Students) about student life, and Tyra and I talk all the time. So, we have a much better sense of how things are going from the students’ perspectives.

在这一年里我们进步了很多。我们的沟通越来越好了，我们更加了解别的部门在做一些什么事情，也在规划上改善了许多。我们和学生的沟通越来越多。我每周都会请一起喝茶，了解一些他们关心的事情。他们在学术上如果遇到问题就来找我， 如果在生活上遇到困难就去找Tyra Liebmann (上海纽约大学学生事务院长)，我跟Tyra几乎天天都有交流，所以我们充分把握着学生们的观点。

It is a curious balance to find, because education is not driven by the consumer or a consumer activity. Students give us suggestions, and we always consider what they say. Sometimes we think “That’s a good idea”, but other times we feel we might know better than they do about their education and what we’re trying to provide for their education. This is a very creative interaction. The exciting thing about NYU Shanghai is that we’re so small and new, so we can do a lot of things that aren’t possible in a larger institution. It’s easier to make changes.

找到平衡，是一件极微妙的事情。教育并非消费者主导一切，教育也不该被视为一种消费活动。学生可以给我们一些建议，而每一个建议我们都会认真地去考虑。有时候会觉得他们的想法是正确的，但也有时候，事实上，我们感觉比他们更懂得因该怎么去教育、给他们提供哪些方面的资源。这是一个颇具创造性的互动过程。上海纽约大学还很小、很新，这也是这所学校的优势，我们可以做很多大学院做不到的事情，也很容易做调整。

You’re responsible for structuring the curriculum and the future of the curriculum at NYU Shanghai. What is your vision for the curriculum?
作为教务长，您负责构建学校目前和将来的课程，您对未来的课程有什么看法？

At the moment we don’t have departments because we’re so small, and one of the wonderful things that has come out of that is the constant cross-disciplinary communication and interaction. In New York, I hardly knew anyone in the science departments, but here, I talk to our science faculty all the time, and everyone else as well, no matter what their academic discipline. We also have our weekly lunch seminars that everybody comes to. Historians listen to talks by Physicists, and Scientists listen to talks by Historians, and so on. This is really intellectually stimulating.

目前我们规模还很小，所以教授还没有被分配到各个系，所以我们享受着多学科间密切沟通交流的乐趣。在纽约我几乎不认识其他系里的教授，而在这里我天天有机会和理科教授谈话，还包括别的学科里的教授们。我们每周举办的研讨会会吸引许多人，历史学家有机会听到物理学家的演讲，科学家有机会听历史学家讲话，等等。这是相互促进智慧的绝好机会。

We really hope to create a university where people talk to each other across disciplines. For example, we’re hoping to hire a philosopher of science, so philosophy and science will have a strong connection. There are interactions between economics and neuroscience, between literature and social science. I think if we can keep these links between disciplines as we continue to build the curriculum, and keep people very connected, then that will be a distinctive feature of NYU Shanghai.

我们希望建立一所跨学科的大学。我们将会聘请一位科学哲学家，让哲学和科学紧密联系。在这里，经济学者和神经科学学者互相影响、文学家和社会学家也有交流。如果我们可以在学校的成长过程中保留这些跨学科的联系，上海纽约大学的课程将会是非常独特的。

If funding was not an issue, what would you envision for the school?
如果资金不成问题的话，你对上海纽约大学有怎样的愿景？

I would try to provide opportunities for students to travel and do interesting things. I think even in a globalized world, the opportunity to travel and see the way people live in different cultures at first hand is absolutely unparalleled in terms of learning. It would be a wonderful thing to be able to provide that for our students.

我会为学生们提供机会去各种地方做一些有趣的事情。虽然现在的世界已经全球化，而能够通过亲身经历去体会别的文化，并得到启发，才是与学术并重的重要东西，这是一种不可替代的学习机会。我很希望将来可以给我们的学生更多这样的机会。

This Spring Break we provided support from the Dean’s research funds to take two groups of students on alternative spring break trips to do volunteer work. One group went to Sichuan to work for Habitat for Humanity, and another group went to Yunnan to work with HIV-AIDS affected families, and many of them wrote to me and said, “This has really been an incredible experience. I would like to be able to do more.”
 
今年春假期间，我们从研究经费中拨出了一笔资金，带领两组学生去了中国两个不同的地区参与义务劳动。一组去了四川，做仁爱之家的志愿者；另外一组去了云南，帮助受艾滋病毒影响的家庭。许多参与了这些项目的学生写信告诉我，“这是一次非常棒的经验，我还想参与更多。”

I think what I’d really like to do is buy more time. There aren’t really enough hours in the day to do all of the things we want to do, but that’s one thing I can’t buy.

其实，我真正想要的是更多时间。我们有太多想做的事请，一天24小时实在太少了。但是唯有时间是无法买来的。
 
NYU Shanghai Student Spotlight - Jack Zhu
我们的学生 - 朱华


Behind Jack Zhu’s unassuming manner and quiet exterior is an ambitious young man eager to experience life to the fullest, and a strict taskmaster who sets high standards for himself. The 18 year old NYU Shanghai Freshman recently placed 6th in the “21st Century Coca-Cola Cup”, a nationwide speech competition that took place over the course of a year, involving more than 10 thousand participants from over 700 universities across China. 

18岁的朱华是上海纽约大学一年级的新生，他在今年的可口可乐21世纪全国英语演讲比赛中获得了一等奖，总分第六名的好成绩。为期一年的比赛包括了来自中国七百余所高校的超过一万名参赛者。朱华外表斯文，内心充满抱负，是一个对自己要求很高的年轻学生。

By rights, anyone who has done so well in a competition of such scale should be able to look upon his performance with pride, but Jack Zhu instead confesses disappointment, “I have to say, I was a little disappointed in myself after the results were announced, because I expected much more from myself.” However, Jack brightens up when asked about his plans for the future, “I want to learn as much as I can, and go to as many places as I can.”

在一万名选手中达到第六名是很好的成绩，但是朱华并没有觉得骄傲，他平静地说：“在宣布结果的时候，我有一点失望，因为我觉得我可以做的更好。” 稍后，在聊起对自己将来的打算时，朱华变得充满信心：“我希望自己能够读万卷书，行万里路。”



A young man with a wide range of hobbies and interests bridging music, dance, and the arts, Jack’s name pops up in conjunction with nearly every single extra-curricular activity on campus. Indeed, he had no trouble finding a gallery of schoolmates to listen to him rehearse his speeches for the competition, “I thought I would be really nervous at the Final, because I got so nervous just giving the speech to my classmates, but when I stepped up to the podium I was surprised, because I didn’t feel any anxiety. Chancellor Yu was sitting there in the front row, watching me, and he told me afterwards that I didn’t look nervous at all.”

生活中的朱华兴趣广泛，他爱好音乐、舞蹈、以及艺术，在很多校园课外活动中都能看到他的名字。在为这次比赛排练的时候，很多同学都来听他的演讲。“我本来以为在决赛的时候会很紧张，因为同学们来看我排练的时候我就已经很紧张了，但是真的上了讲台，我一点都没有紧张。俞立中校长后来告诉我，他坐在第一排看决赛，我表现得很放松。”

Jack is a graduate of the High School Affiliated to Fudan University, and he still spends time with some of his close friends from high school. When comparing his experience over the last year with the experiences of his former classmates, the greatest difference Jack sees is worldview, “I’ve learned so much, about teamwork, about other cultures. I’ve gotten glimpses into other worlds from something as simple as sharing a meal with a classmate from another country, and of course, my English has improved a lot.”

朱华毕业于上海复旦大学附属中学。他跟高中同学聚会的时候，大家互相讨论大学一年来的经历。他说最大的不同就是慢慢培养起来的国际视野。 “我在这一年里学到了很多， 包括团队精神和异国文化，即使是跟外国同学一起吃饭这样简单的小事，我也能学到一点以前没有经历过的事情。当然，我的英语也有很大的进步。”

Jack Zhu has always had an active and inquisitive mind, but it seems the past year of study at NYU Shanghai has sparked an even deeper thirst for experience, “I don’t know what the future holds, I mean, after just one year at this school, my expectations have changed so much, but I do know I want to take the opportunity in these four years of university to study a broad range of subjects; so even though I’m looking at a finance or business track, I’m also studying the humanities and taking interactive media arts (IMA) classes. I plan on going to New York and either London or Paris for my study away experiences.”

朱华一直有着活跃好学的心态，一年级的学习更加引发了他对学习的渴求,“短短一年的学习，已经让我对未来的期望和规划有了不少的改变，但是我想在大学四年里尽量接触广泛而多元化的学科内容。我的本科专业可能会是金融和商科，但我还是选修了人文和互动媒体艺术课程。再过两年，我打算去纽约大学全球教学体系中的纽约，伦敦或者巴黎留学。”

Perhaps what is most telling about where Jack is right now in his life are the two speeches he wrote for the semifinals and finals of the Coca-Cola Cup. The speech he wrote for the former is entitled, “University: where students meet diversity”; in the piece, he details his own experiences with diversity at NYU Shanghai, and the different ideas and thinkers he has encountered in Vice-chancellor Jeff Lehman’s class – Global Perspectives on Society. Late Qing Dynasty scholar, Liang Qichao is one of his personal favorites. In his speech for the finals, Jack concludes that these encounters have taught him to “not only know of the world, but also understand the world, and finally, love the world”. The speech he prepared for the final – “to feel happy, be like a child” – has a simpler yet more profound theme. In the speech, Jack talks about his personal belief that simplicity and childlike enthusiasm is the key to happiness, and tells his listeners “not to sacrifice [their] inner child”, and to “feel free to be who [they] once were”. 

朱华在演讲比赛时用过的两篇讲稿或许能够反应他现在的生活状态。在半决赛中，他演讲的题目是“大学：学生接触多元化的地方” ，描述了在上海纽约大学接触到的多元化文化，还特别举例了美方校长雷蒙教授的课程“全球视野下的社会”。朱华很佩服清末思想家梁启超。在决赛中，朱华用一句话总结了他在新学校的经历“从学习了解世界，到学会爱上世界。”他的决赛演讲标题是“快乐源于童心”，他相信淳朴的、孩子般的热情是快乐人生的秘诀，“不要放弃童心，并大胆去做自己。”
